- Chartreuse de Villeneuve lez Avignon - La Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction was founded by Pope Innocent VI. After his election in 1352, he donated his lands and private residence in Villeneuve lez Avignon. Initially intended for twelve monks, the monastery received numerous privileges. The decoration of its private chapel was assigned to Matteo Giovannetti, who also painted the frescoes in the Palace of the Popes. Pope Innocent VI maintained a close relationship with the monastery and was buried there upon his death in 1362. His mausoleum, removed after the Revolution, was returned to the church in 1959. The work initiated by Innocent VI was continued by his nephew, Pierre Selva de Montirac, Cardinal of Pampelona, who completed the St John Cloister in 1372. With its three cloisters, it became the largest Carthusian monastery in France. During the French Revolution, it was divided and sold, its library and artworks dispersed, and the monastery suffered significant damage.
