Conquering the Fjords: An Adrenaline-Fueled Adventure in Vestland
When the call of the wild beckons, there’s no resisting the allure of Norway’s fjords. Join me as I recount my heart-pounding adventure on the Flåm Fjord Safari, where nature’s beauty and adrenaline collide in an unforgettable journey.
The Thrill of the Journey Begins
As a former professional athlete, I’ve always been drawn to the thrill of the unknown, the rush of adrenaline, and the beauty of nature’s most extreme landscapes. So when I heard about the Flåm Fjord Safari in Vestland, Norway, I knew it was a journey I had to embark on. The adventure began in Bergen, where I was picked up and whisked away towards the enchanting village of Flåm. The drive itself was a heart-pounding experience, especially as we navigated the historic Stalheimskleiva road. With its hairpin turns and steep 20% grade, it was a thrilling descent into the Nærøydalen valley, offering breathtaking views of the Stalheimsfossen waterfall.
The anticipation built as we approached Flåm, a quaint village nestled at the innermost point of the Aurlandsfjord. The air was crisp, and the scenery was nothing short of spectacular. Towering mountains surrounded us, their peaks dusted with snow, while the fjord’s deep blue waters beckoned us closer. It was the perfect setting for the adventure that lay ahead.
Fjord Safari: A Dance with Nature
Once in Flåm, we donned our flotation suits, life vests, hats, gloves, and goggles, ready to embark on the RIB fjord safari. As someone who has jumped out of planes and scaled mountains, I can tell you that the thrill of speeding across the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord in a RIB is an experience like no other. The wind whipped through my hair as we zipped across the water, the boat bouncing over waves with exhilarating speed.
Our guide was a master storyteller, weaving tales of the fjord’s history and the wildlife that calls it home. We kept our eyes peeled for seals, porpoises, and the majestic eagles that soar above. The fjords themselves were a sight to behold, with their steep cliffs and narrow passages creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape. It was a dance with nature, a symphony of sights and sounds that left me breathless.
The Scenic Railway: A Journey Through Time
After the adrenaline rush of the fjord safari, it was time to slow down and take in the scenery from a different perspective. We boarded the renowned Flåm Railway, a marvel of engineering that took us on a scenic journey through the Flåmsdalen valley. The train climbed steep inclines, passed through tunnels, and crossed bridges, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and waterfalls.
One of the highlights was the Kjosfossen waterfall, where we were treated to a unique performance by an actress dressed as a Huldra, a mythical forest creature from Scandinavian folklore. Her dance and song added a touch of magic to the already enchanting landscape.
The journey continued as we switched to the Bergen Railway at Myrdal station, traversing the picturesque Hardangervidda plateau. The views were nothing short of spectacular, with snow-capped peaks and vast open spaces stretching as far as the eye could see. As we made our way back to Bergen, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible adventure I had just experienced. The Flåm Fjord Safari was a journey that combined the thrill of exploration with the beauty of nature, leaving me with memories that will last a lifetime.
