Highlights
  • Elephant Rock - Hop on an ATV with us to discover the highlights of Vestmannaeyjar, including volcanic landscapes and puffins. Our journey begins by heading south along the island, where we’ll visit one of its most unique landmarks, the elephant-shaped rock known as “Elephant Rock”.
  • Storhofdi (Great Cape) - From Elephant Rock, we drive towards Stórhöfði, offering a panoramic view of the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. On clear days, you can see all the way to Surtsey, the southernmost island formed by an underwater eruption on November 14, 1963.

At Stórhöfði, the views are stunning in every direction, though the strong winds can be dizzying as it is the windiest spot in the country. We’ll take a walk to a special location to observe the puffins, the crown jewel of Vestmannaeyjar, as they play on the slopes, take off, and land. Our guide will share fascinating facts about the puffins and their habitat.

  • Eldfell - Next, we head from Stórhöfði into the lava fields for the “off-road” segment of our tour.

We’ll visit Prestvik beach, where the fishing ship Pelagus was stranded, and see the spot where Guðlaugur Friðþórsson came ashore after swimming 5-6 km in the dark, cold sea following the sinking of Hellisey VE 503, as depicted in the movie “The Deep.” We’ll navigate through the lava fields, into the heart of the Eldfell volcano, and along the coast, where the views are spectacular.

This tour is perfect for families who will enjoy exploring the historical sites of Vestmannaeyjar on a fun ATV ride. The ATVs are automatic and easy to operate, requiring no prior experience. Each ATV seats two people, with drivers needing a valid license and passengers required to be at least 6 years old.

This guided tour includes waterproof overalls, gloves, and helmets for all participants.

Good quick experience - Great trip, it was a fun way to see the island (including areas off limits to bus tours) relatively quickly. After a short orientation we were off to see the puffins, it was about 5 miles on paved roads. When we got there the leader explained about the birds and habitat and then we were given time to see and take pictures. From there it was on to the volcanic crater where a simular presentation was given. Then back into town and the finish of the tour. It was fun and paced well! Only criticism would be more office staff to help guest between tours and sanitation practices on gloves / jumpsuits and helmets was minimal to none.

Meh - Most of the excursion was on paved roads. It was a relief and pleasure to get to the volcanic trails where an ATV was more useful. Even then, you could do this with a car. For first time ATV riders, this was fun and safe. If you're an ATV owner or frequent rider, this was very tame. There isn't a whole lot to do on the island so this is a good time filler. The young ones enjoyed it. Go prepared for rain, even if the day looks good.
