- Santuario della Madonna di Monte Berico - The Sanctuary of Monte Berico has its origins in two apparitions of the Madonna to Vincenza Pasini, a woman who was delivering food to her husband working on the hill: the first occurred on March 7, 1426, and the second on August 1, 1428. Our Lady promised to end the plague and requested that a church be built in her honor at that location. Consequently, in 1428, within a few months, the first late Gothic church and a small cenoby were constructed to accommodate a religious community dedicated to welcoming pilgrims.
- Basilica Palladiana - The Basilica Palladiana, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, stands as the emblem of the city of Vicenza. It was the center of Vicenza’s political and economic life, and during medieval times, the Palazzo della Ragione was a Gothic structure featuring a vast hall on the upper floor and a bustling array of workshops on the ground floor. After the collapse of the 15th-century loggias designed by Tommaso Formenton, the City Council in the 16th century deliberated on the building’s renovation. Renowned architects of the era, including Giulio Romano, Sebastiano Serlio, Jacopo Sansovino, and Michele Sanmicheli, were consulted. Despite these prestigious opinions, in March 1546, the Council approved the design of a relatively unknown local architect, Andrea Palladio, who was just thirty-eight years old at the time.

Vicenza’s golden era commenced in 1540 when the Venetian nobility decided to revamp the city and its surrounding areas. They enlisted Andrea di Pietro della Gondola, famously known as Palladio, one of the era’s most esteemed architects, for this challenging endeavor. Palladio was tasked with designing new residences for the Venetian aristocrats, leading to Vicenza being adorned with magnificent private palaces and public buildings, while remarkable villas were crafted in the countryside.
‘The city of Vicenza and Palladio’s villas in the Veneto region’ have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, encompassing 23 palaces in Vicenza and 24 villas in the nearby area.
The tour will commence at the central Piazza dei Signori, featuring its elegant monuments, and will include a leisurely walk around the city, including Corso Palladio, the city’s main street. The tour will also include a visit to the Basilica Palladiana, a masterpiece by Andrea Palladio (if closed, the Church of Santa Corona will be visited instead).
Finally, the tour will conclude with a visit to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monte Berico, where a stunning view of the city of Vicenza can be enjoyed from the square in front.
