Embracing the Spirit of Victoria Falls
As the sun rises over the majestic Victoria Falls, the air is filled with the promise of adventure and cultural discovery. This weekend, with clear skies and warm temperatures, offers the perfect opportunity to delve into the heart of Matabeleland North Province, Zimbabwe. The weather is ideal for outdoor exploration, with temperatures ranging from a comfortable 62.5°F in the morning to a warm 88.8°F in the afternoon on April 5th, and slightly warmer on April 6th. The UV index is high, so remember to pack your sunscreen as you embark on a journey that promises both excitement and enlightenment.
Start your weekend with a Traditional Village Tour on April 5th, available from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. This tour offers a unique glimpse into the daily lives of the local villagers, just a short 20-minute drive from the town of Victoria Falls. As you wander through the village, you’ll have the chance to interact with the locals, observe their daily routines, and perhaps even participate in some of their chores. This immersive experience is not just about observing; it’s about engaging with a culture that has thrived for centuries. One recent visitor noted,
“Great guide Muzie to traditional village Victoria Falls - Muzie, Shearwater tours, Victoria Falls, took us on a fascinating, warm, hospital visit to a traditional village outside of Village Falls. On the way he told us about life in the villages and taught me some greetings in the native language. We saw all the village buildings, living rooms, bedrooms, inside and outside cooking huts, livestock, met and talked with the family and children. A highlight was a talk by the village leader who was a traditional healer. In his healing hut, he explained treatments he could do and medicines he used, and when they had to use standard hospitals. We had a family member as guide who talked about daily living, marriage customs, family relationships, how the buildings were constructed, roles of family members, use of livestock (cattle, goats, chicken, pigeons), and the many pet dogs that were used to sound the alarm if any animals approached the fenced but remote village. It was about a 2 hour tour. After, at our request, Muzie took us to a craft market more in town, a good, short stop where I bought some teak bowls as gifts. Bargaining standard there. Muzie was an excellent guide. Informative and attentive to all our needs. Thank you, Muzie, and the people of the Nebedels village” (Reviewed on 2024-09-13).
A Journey Through Time
On April 6th, continue your cultural exploration with the Rural Tour available from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. This tour is a journey back in time, offering a detox from the hustle and bustle of urban life. As you travel 25 kilometers from Victoria Falls town, you’ll find yourself in a world where tradition and local customs are preserved as they have been for centuries. This experience is not just a tour; it’s a chance to understand the challenges and joys of rural life in Zimbabwe.
Visitors have described this tour as a poignant experience, with one reviewer stating,
“Poignant experience - This is something that everyone should do when visiting this region of Africa. To see how the people live in the villages made such an impression on me…Americans are so privileged to have electricity, running water, abundant varieties of food and free schooling. The family who welcomed us to their village was so gracious to share their culture and lifestyle” (Reviewed on 2024-10-07).
This tour not only provides insight into the daily lives of the villagers but also offers the opportunity to bring gifts such as stationery or clothing, which are greatly appreciated by the community.
