A Journey Through the Elqui Valley

The moment I set foot in Vicuña, I felt the unique energy of the Elqui Valley envelop me. Known for its clear skies and vibrant landscapes, this region of Chile has long been on my list of places to explore. As a biologist and environmental activist, I was particularly drawn to the Puclaro Reservoir Eco Bike Tour—a chance to experience the natural beauty of the valley while learning about its rich cultural heritage.

Our journey began in the heart of Vicuña, where our guide led us through the town’s charming streets before heading out into the countryside. The air was crisp and invigorating, and the anticipation of what lay ahead was palpable. As we cycled along rural roads, the landscape unfolded before us—a tapestry of vineyards, arid hills, and lush green valleys. The contrast was striking, a testament to the region’s unique climate and geography.

The vineyards we passed were more than just picturesque; they were a living testament to the valley’s agricultural heritage. These grapes are the foundation of the world-renowned pisco, a spirit that has become synonymous with Chilean culture. Discovering Hidden Gems

Our first stop was the quaint town of El Tambo, home to the oldest church in the Elqui Valley. Built in the 16th century, the church has withstood the test of time, surviving a devastating fire in 2004 and reopening in 2008. Standing in its shadow, I felt a profound connection to the past, imagining the generations of people who had gathered here over the centuries.

As we explored the town square, our guide shared stories of Gabriela Mistral, the Nobel Prize-winning poet who once visited this very place. Her words, inspired by the landscapes of her homeland, echoed in my mind as I took in the sights and sounds of El Tambo. Continuing our journey, we made our way to Gualliguaica, a town with a rich history and a vibrant present. Once a stop on the Elquino Train, Gualliguaica was relocated to make way for the Puclaro Reservoir. Today, it is a hub for adventure tourism, offering activities like kitesurfing and trekking. As we stood at the foot of the reservoir, I marveled at the way nature and human ingenuity had come together to create this stunning landscape.

Embracing the Spirit of the Valley

The final leg of our tour took us past Viña Falernia, a vineyard that stands at the northern frontier of Chilean wine production. Here, the grapes thrive under the intense sun of the Elqui Valley, producing wines that are as bold and aromatic as the landscape itself. Although we didn’t have the opportunity to visit the vineyard, the mere sight of it was enough to appreciate the dedication and passion that goes into every bottle.

Our journey concluded at the Olivier Papaya Sales Room, a cozy spot where we sampled a variety of products made from the region’s iconic fruit. The sweet, tropical flavors were a delightful end to our day, a taste of the valley’s bounty that lingered long after we left.

Reflecting on the experience, I was struck by the harmony between nature and culture that defines the Elqui Valley. This eco bike tour was more than just a ride through beautiful landscapes; it was a journey into the heart of a region that has much to teach us about sustainability and the importance of preserving our natural world. As I pedaled back to Vicuña, I felt a renewed sense of purpose, inspired by the resilience and beauty of the Elqui Valley.
