Belvedere’s Genius Loci (spirit of place) is enriched with intricate details that distinctly represent Austria and Vienna. Want to explore what art pieces from varied eras articulate about the distinct Viennese identity? I invite you to embark on a journey through the halls of Belvedere, gaining an understanding of the national psyche.
By examining Gustav Klimt’s iconic ‘Judith’ and ‘The Kiss’ we can understand why female sensuality garnered medical curiosity in Vienna. Similarly, the haunting aura of Egon Schiele’s ‘Embrace’ and ‘The Girl and Death’ shed light on why this city is the birthplace of psychoanalysis.
The intricate baroque embellishments of the palace, complemented by the emphasis on heroic themes of yore, encapsulate the imperial aura that imbues the city, influencing both the residents and tourists. And Ferdinand Waldmüller’s lucid artwork exhibits the renowned ‘Viennese comfort’, requiring a discerning gaze to uncover the hidden tragedies beneath these widely-promoted scenes.
Amid the gilded medieval altars and Klimt’s golden masterpieces, there’s a spark of wit and intellect that flickers from the sobering art of Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. What makes the illustrious collection of this palace dazzle? And what reveals the true face of this erstwhile imperial capital? The answers lie within the gallery walls of the Belvedere Palace.
