Additional Information

Promotional signs throughout Vienna constantly invite passersby to the Belvedere to witness ‘the most celebrated kiss’. On our tour, you will fully comprehend the significance of The Kiss, and have the opportunity to decide whose interpretations are more convincing: those of art historians, marketing professionals or spectators.

Not only will you decipher Klimt’s unique style, but you’ll also observe how the turn of the century is reflected in this exceptional artist’s work.

We’ll follow Klimt’s creative journey from his initial ‘Portrait of an Unknown Woman’ to his incomplete ‘Bride’, abandoned in his studio when the artist was abruptly transported to the hospital by an ambulance.

Klimt had long earned the reputation of ‘the painter of beautiful women’, and we will show you why current academic opinions suggest Klimt understood his models’ yearnings better than his contemporary Sigmund Freud comprehended his patients’ troubles.

During this tour, we’ll delve deeper into the aesthetics of Klimt’s art, accompanied by the work of his contemporaries and rivals, while understanding why this artist has such a profound significance to the city of Vienna.

So, if your interest extends beyond just ‘The Kiss’ to unravel the complex connotations within Klimt’s masterpieces, this tour of the Klimt collection at the Belvedere is perfect for you.

A fabulous private tour with a great guide - Our guide, Julia gave a wonderful tour which included not just Klimt but a great deal more art history. We learned how to discern specific parts of a painting for example. The Klimt paintings were exquisite and Julia’s knowledge added so much to our enjoyment and appreciation. A private tour is a great way to get the most out of the experience. Thank you again Julia!

The story behind the picture - Julia was a really knowledgeable expert on art history and provided us with a stimulating and provocative insight into the evolution of art, Klimt and The Kiss. I'm no art history expert but learnt a lot from this tour. If you're looking for intellectual stimulation and the story behind the picture, look no further.

The Why of Klimt - Klimt It was a pleasure to have a tour with Julia tracing back the roots of Klimt’s art. Being a tour-guide myself I choose carefully tours while travelling and I always look for somebody who could not just tell the facts but what is behind it. It was very interesting to find roots of 1900 art in the medieval gothic art, in 18th century experiments, in baroque. I loved the way how the facts and interpretations were put together. So definitely recommend it for those who are open for the discussion and reflection about art, its roots and new perspective for modernism.

Learnt so much on this tour. - Julia was very informative about the background to the art world of Vienna and how and why these changes influenced the new movement. It was a delight to be shown the important pieces in the Belvedere collection and then the stories behind not only the Klimt artworks but the others that followed. Allow at least 2.5 hours to do this tour.

Most memorable day of my whole trip was to see Klimt’s masterpiece with Julia. It’s a MUST DO in Vienna. - A bucket list item fulfilled by Julia. I had planned my trip to Central Europe with my heart set on seeing the world famous “Klimt” and the way Julia unraveled his masterpiece as a final spectacle, is something I will remember forever. She began the tour by breaking his inspirations into different centuries and styles while giving a great sense of art scene in Vienna in the 1900s overall and even before that. Her background as an art historian makes her knowledge deep and her exposure to theology was impressive. Her oration was nuanced, detailed and laced with emotion and love for Gustav Klimt’s works and when we left the museum, I felt I had seen this masterpiece in the most remarkable way! Please book this for sure and you will make a memory of a lifetime. If you are an art enthusiast, Julia is your go to person in Vienna. She even went over Schiele’s work with me! Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!!!!

Make sure you keep copies of receipts and pictures! - The tour person never showed up. We ended up buying tickets and touring ourselves with an audio guide. Then we got charged by the tour operator! $343.36. Be careful.
