Not to be missed - The foundation was formed in 2022 by Heidi Horten, widow of a wealthy Austrian entrepreneur who had done business with the Nazis. The museum displays masterpieces of the twentieth century collected by the founder and her husband. For all the works is marked - as indeed in all museums in Vienna - the date of acquisition to signal that they are not property confiscated from the Jews and where the provenance is of this kind is indicated that the foundation has nevertheless reached an agreement with the family of the legitimate owners in accordance with the principles of Washington. The theme of the origin of the family’s wealth is addressed immediately at the entrance of the exhibition. The setting is impactful and there are works of the highest quality. Definitely a museum not to be missed.

An enrichment - The fantastic architecture alone, with its large, light-flooded rooms, inspires. The guided tour of the exhibition Light Sound Senses by a competent young art facilitator who fulfills his task with passion, who not only explains art but also makes it tangible, was outstanding. An enrichment for the mind that will continue to work for a long time.

A surprisingly beautiful museum! - The museum is bright and spacious. The staff are friendly. The collection is diverse and beautiful, the temporary exhibition of image and light is surprising. Too bad the shop is very modest. The images outside are fitting. Highly recommended!

A disaster. Unless you want an Instagram museum. - I wanted to love this collection. I had seen WOW at the Leopold on a previous visit. This museum and it's collection is simply not for art lovers or anyone educated about contemporary and pop art. There is so much wrong with everything visiting is jarring and disorienting. The ground level - what they bill as the permanent collection- was selected by the public. What you get is NOT a collection but an " assortment." There is no cohesion or logic between the pieces which range from Klimpt to Basquiat. It's completely disarming and the cartoonist curtains and furniture on the walls feel childish and I'll conceived. Even more alarming is an entire room devoted to trying to forgive the Horton's and the museum for the source of the funding. This seems somewhat acceptable until you go on the website where they refuse to say who bought the building, who finances the museum. They hope you accept their apology but the transparency is limited. Then there are lines everywhere telling you not to step beyond. In one spot there's barely 24 inches for traffic to flow between rooms. Then there is the design. Everything is "open" so the very noisy and intrusive sound and light exhibit just echoes on the ground floor which is distracting and poorly thought out. The exhibit on floors 2 & 3 - sound, light and smell is equally strange. It's not historical, not a specific period or genre. It's a mishmash of what feels like they want an Instagram moment. And, at the end, you discover that's exactly what they want and they tell you with a floor to ceiling plea for your selfie. Some of the artwork is good. The Gerhard Richter pieces, the lone Cy Twombly, the Basquiat's. But everything feels out of place. They also tell you they are self funded but won't disclose financial info. And I paid 16 eu. So I was part of that funding. As one person said in their review, this feels like someone went on a shopping spree and just bought art. It's too bad as there are so many missed opportunities here.
