Highlights
  • Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna - Built by Emperor Franz Joseph to house the splendid imperial collections, it is now one of the world’s most important museums. Artefacts from ancient Egypt to classical antiquity to the late 18th century document the patronage and connoisseurship of the art-loving members of the House of Habsburg. In the Picture Gallery you can see celebrated master-pieces by Rubens, Rembrandt, Raphael, Vermeer, Velázquez, Titian and Durer, as well as the world’s largest collection of works by Bruegel. At the Kunstkammer Vienna goldsmith’s works such as the famous saliera by Benvenuto Cellini, sculptural masterpieces, filigree works in ivory, valuable timepieces and complex automata by the best and most famous artists of the day – each item unique in the world – provide an unrivalled cross-section through the history of art. Equally enjoyable for every art-lover is the magnificent building itself with its imposing staircase featuring a series of paintings on which Gustav Klimt collaborated.

Expansive and beautiful! - The Kunsthistorisches Museum is an expansive and beautifully arranged facility, located within convenient walking distance from Vienna’s Opera District. A world-renowned museum, it is also Austria’s largest. What a genuine pleasure to behold such a variety of works by Raphael, van Eyck, Dürer, Rubens, Vermeer, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder (among many others). Highly recommended!

A museum of incredible wealth - Very beautiful building with a sumptuous staircase. Very beautiful gallery of paintings where multiple masterpieces come together. Let us cite among others Vermeer, Giorgione, Raphael, Correggio, Velázquez, Titian, Brueghel, Dürer, Caravaggio etc... without forgetting the curious portraits of Arcimboldo... You should not leave without visiting the Kunstkammer, installed in a wing of the ground floor where around 2,200 precious objects from the Imperial Treasury and the emperors' cabinet of curiosities are visible (objects dating in particular from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and baroque...). The most famous piece of the Treasury is the gold salt shaker made in 1543 by Benvenuto Cellini for the King of France François I. This museum also has beautiful antique collections (Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman collections including the Gemma Augustea). No point hoping to see all of these wonders in one day. This museum should indeed be enjoyed several times.

A World Class Museum! - The KHM , which we visited on April 25, ranks as one of the top museums we have visited in our travels, comparable to the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art , the Rijksmuseum and the Prado. The skip the line tickets facilitated our entrance and we spent a lovely half day exploring the picture galleries. The museum built by Emperor Franz Joseph to house the Hapsburg collections at the end of the 19th century, is an incredible display of wealth and beauty and (unlike some museums) is very well marked and easy to navigate. The Bruegel collection was huge and there were many familiar masterpieces of Rembrandt, Rubens, Raphael, Vermeer, and more on display. A nice bonus was the museum cafe which served an excellent lunch with very efficient waitstaff.

Tickets purchased online must be exchanged - It's a wonderful museum where you can spend the whole day. I bought my ticket online on site. When I bought my Belvedere ticket the day before, I received an email with a 10% discount. I used that 10% discount to buy a combination ticket for Leopold. It was even better value. The Belvedere ticket has a QR code that appears on the app, which is your ticket, but the Kunsthistorisches Museum does not have a QR code, so you have to exchange it for a paper ticket at the ticket office to the right of the museum entrance (tickets are usually purchased on the left) before entering. To use the audio guide, you press the numbers on the map you were given, which is a little confusing, but it makes it more enjoyable if you have it.

Beautiful artwork ! - The museum is absolutely amazing. Filled with beautiful art works, sculptures and many other ancient Artifacts. The highlight is definetely the building itself. The interior is lovely and the stair case leading up to the picture gallery is eye catching.

Not skip the line - Great museum to visit. However, after printing what I thought were my tickets to skip the line and lining up to enter I was told I needed to go to the ticket office to have my “voucher” exchanged for a ticket. So had to line up three times - once to enter, once to get my voucher exchanged and then to enter again. I paid for my entrance months in advance and was rather irritated! I have used Trip Advisor many times in different countries for tours and museums and never had a problem.

Not worth the extra money - We arrived at the museum after 12. The line to pick up our voucher was longer than the regular ticket line. We love Viator, but this is definitely not worth it.

Mistake - There is no sens to buy "ticket" by Viator. It is not the ticket. It is a voucher. You can simply go when you ready and buy the ticket at the Museum. There is no "skip the line", to change voucher for the ticket you have stay in the same line with people buying tickets.
