Vung Tau Day Tour with Jack - Our tour guide, Jack, spoke excellent English, was very professional and knowledgeable and was very enthusiastic. The pick-up at Phu My port outside the gate was trouble-free. There were eight in our group and our tour vehicle was a fancy, new, and very comfortable “party bus” designed to seat a dozen in comfort. We left the fancy interior lighting and music off so we could listen to Jack summarize a thousand years of Vietnam history in the 45-minutes it took to drive south on great roads to Vung Tau. Jack’s presentation was in small, easily digestible bites, interspersed with interesting stories and antidotes, and numerous hand-help photos, maps and charts. Once in Vung Tau, we stopped for Vietnamese traditional coffee, then visited the White Palace, quietly walking around the interior and exterior of this famous and historic landmark. Next, we drove to a peninsula with nice views of the Christ the King statue and beaches (none of us wanted to climb the hill for an in-person visit if the giant statue). We had a delicious Vietnamese lunch in the ex-pat tourist district followed by a visit to the Whale Temple and the Niết Bàn Tịnh Xá Buddhist Temple. Our last stop was at New Wave Beach, the main tourist beach in the city where we had free time to relax, walk around and get an ice cream if we wanted (not included). When we were all ready, we got back in to our fancy party bus and Jack shared a few more facts on the way back to the port, including a neutral, but factual and simple discussion of the American/Viet Nam War and post-war period and recent economic achievements. If you have a port call at Phu My and have already visited Ho Chi Min city (AKA Saigon) and want to do something different, I can recommend this tour, and specifically Jack (Tâm Phan).
