Exploring Steim Farm: A Family Adventure in Vik
Our family’s visit to Steim Farm in Vik was a delightful blend of history, nature, and hands-on learning. From feeding alpacas to tasting fresh raspberries, the experience was both educational and entertaining.
A Journey Through Time at Steim Farm
Our family’s recent adventure to Steim Farm in Vik was nothing short of enchanting. As a museum curator, I am always on the lookout for experiences that blend history with hands-on learning, and this farm tour did not disappoint. From the moment we were picked up by our friendly guide at the tourist information center, we knew we were in for a treat.
The farm itself is steeped in history, dating back to the Viking age. As we strolled through the lush fields, our guide shared fascinating stories about the farm’s past and present. The authenticity of the farm was palpable, with its running operations providing a genuine glimpse into rural life. Our children were particularly captivated by the process of turning green grass into animal feed, a simple yet profound lesson in sustainability.
The highlight of this section of the tour was undoubtedly the organic vegetable garden. We were fortunate to visit during raspberry season, and the taste of freshly picked berries was a delight for the senses. The garden was not only a feast for the palate but also an educational experience, teaching our kids about the importance of organic farming and the joys of eating fresh produce.
Meeting the Farm’s Adorable Residents
One of the most memorable aspects of our visit was the opportunity to meet and interact with the farm’s charming animals. Our children were thrilled to feed and pet the alpacas and muscovy ducks, who seemed just as delighted to see us. The farm’s friendly boar goats grazed peacefully in the pastures above, while the traditional long-wooled sheep and Norwegian fjord horses could be seen on neighboring farms.
The animal stables were a hive of activity, with ducks nesting and baby animals making occasional appearances. It was heartwarming to see our kids’ faces light up as they connected with these gentle creatures. The farm’s commitment to animal welfare was evident, and it was a joy to witness the harmonious relationship between the animals and their environment.
For families with young children, the farm offers a few surprises that keep the little ones engaged and entertained. Our kids were particularly taken with the playful antics of the animals, making this a truly unforgettable experience for them.
A Glimpse of Vik’s Rich Heritage
Beyond the farm, the tour offered a panoramic view of Vik and its picturesque old town, Vikøyri. Nestled at the mouth of the Vikja river, this charming village is the administrative center of the municipality of Vik in Vestland county. The sight of the village from the farm was breathtaking, with the fjord providing a stunning backdrop.
Our guide also pointed out the Hove Stone Church, one of the oldest stone churches in Norway, dating back to around 1170. Although we only caught a glimpse of it from the farm, the church’s historical significance was not lost on us. For those interested, the tour offers the option to be dropped off at the church, providing an opportunity to explore this architectural gem up close.
As we concluded our visit, we learned about the farm’s exciting new project—a café that promises to be a delightful addition to the experience. With its blend of history, nature, and hands-on learning, the Steim Farm tour is a must-visit for families seeking an enriching and entertaining day out in Vik. Steim Farm Tour
