Additional Information

Cockburn’s expansive maturation warehouse, residing in the historical core of Vila Nova de Gaia, is the largest, hosting 6,518 Port Barrels ageing under its colossal ceiling. It boasts one of the rare facilities with its team of barrel-makers.

Cockburn’s Ports undergo meticulous ageing in oak vessels and ferries under the supervision of expert tasters and wine-makers until they attain perfect ripeness.

The grand scale of Cockburn’s warehouse affords ample room to store bountiful amounts of the Special Reserve ageing process, which cultivates its distinctive style and flawless equilibrium, gained from extended wood ageing than any other Reserve Port.

Leave the Tourists behind with a Tour of Cockburn's Cellars with Barrel Makers - We were so happy we chose to book a tour of Cockburn's Cellars. Walking just a little further past the other Port Cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia allowed us to escape the many tourists and actually get to see Barrel Makers during our tour. Cockburn's is the largest wooden Port Cellar in Gaia and the only one with Barrel Makers. We chose a 1-1/2 hour English Speaking Tour and Tasting of 3 Port Wines in the special John Smith's Room. We had a very informative tourguide. It was exciting to get to see stored bottles of Port from as long ago as 1861! Before your tour we would recommend trying their Delicious Special Reserve Port Ice Cream.

Great time! - A tour guide on the free walking tour suggested Cockburns along with 3 other port cellars. This one worked out best timewise and we were glad we went. Our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. We learned about port and enjoyed it. We caught the bus back to Porto just outside of the winery. The Port is very good also! I recommend it!

Just an OK tour - I didn't find the tour very interesting, although I did learn something about how port wine is made. The tour is touted as 1 1/2 hours, but the tour is actually only about 1 hour and the remaining 1/2 hr. is the taste testing. The entry price is fair if you get the basic tasting.
