Additional Information

The phrase ‘across the river’ is a common phrase in Porto, particularly among the locals. However, many tourists remain unaware of what lies past the picturesque wine caverns along the riverbanks.

In this trip, we’ll reveal to you an area not usually visited by tourists, rich with traditional food and brimming with local culture. We’ll traverse the intricate, narrow lanes of Gaia, visit Portugal’s oldest winery set up by King Joseph I and the Marquis of Pombal, and explore the typical Porto cuisine like francesinha and local culinary secrets like alheira. Each of these delicacies will be enjoyed with a matching local wine or beer.

As you relish the walk and delicacies, you’ll gain insights into Portuguese and regional history from not just our guide, but also from locals who love engaging in conversations and sharing their experiences. All the while, you’ll be feasting your eyes on the unmatched views of Porto city.

Highlight - During your visit to Portugal’s oldest winery, you’ll get a chance to step into a concealed wine cellar housing centuries-old bottles of maturing port wine.

A spectacular tour! - This was an outstanding tour. We nicknamed our guide Freddy. If you take the tour you will know why. He looks like a celebrity. That aside we had so much fun and learned a lot about Port wines in Portugal. This is a tour not to be missed. Thank you Freddy. Cheryl and Danny

Outstanding tour guide and experience - We had an amazing experience today with our guide Gonsalos (hope that is correct). He took us on a wonderful tour of some true local places sharing a lot of information about life in the city and its culinary secrets. We also visited an amazing port cellar which culminated in a beautiful tasting of four excellent ports. I would highly recommend this tour.

Wonderful food and port tasting - We enjoyed our tour with Diogo. Each stop was unique and all of the samples were tasty. The port wine cave was really interesting, especially seeing the owner’s room with the really old bottles and cobwebs. We liked all the ports that we tried and even bought a bottle to bring home. The Gaia neighborhood seemed more real and not touristy. A lot of local people were dining in the restaurants with us. Definitely pay attention to the notes on the email they send the day before the tour and make sure to meet the guide at the top of the hill. We only ended up with 4 people on our tour—not sure if the rest just didn’t show or couldn’t find the meeting point. We had actually done an Eating Europe food tour in Lisbon earlier in our vacation and it was really interesting to see the differences between the food of Lisbon and Porto. The experiences were different and I felt we had a good introduction to Portuguese food and wine between the two tours.
