Tomato Industrial Museum, D.Nomikos - Tomato Museum
The museum is where the tomato factory used to be, founded by D.Nomikos in Vlichada. The historic factory was opened in 1945 by George Nomikos, the son of Dimitrios Nomikos, who was the first in Santorini to produce tomato paste with industrial means at a small pre-industrial plant in Messaria. On exhibit are a variety of interesting objects including processing machinery dating of 1890, documents, tools, labels, and old cans. The museum organizes workshops and fun activities for children. You can experience a journey to the past through a guided tour and witness the traditional methods of cultivation, processing and production of tomato. In addition, you may admire the various exhibits that date back to 1890; a collection that includes processing machinery, old tools and manuscript, the first labels ever used, as well as an audiovisual material with recorded narrations of people who worked at the factory that makes the visit worthwhile. - Canava Santorini Distillery - Canava Traditional Folklore Museum Situated in Mesaria using original items. It includes traditional workshops of old occupations barrel-makers, etc). The traditional winery is hosted in traditional cave houses of 1861. It holds a gallery, historical archives (manuscripts, etc). You may visit the beautiful garden with trees and flowers, where the lovely chapel dedicated to S. Constantine and Helen was built. In the Museum Gallery, a wing which was added later to the original house, you may admire a display of drawings, oil paintings, watercolors and other works of well-known Greek artists, inspired by Santorini. Finally, the Folklore Museum hosts different traditional workshops with full equipment for carpenters, barrel makers, shoemakers and tinsmiths.
A visit to the museum is a time travel to a bygone era and offers valuable insight into the culture and tradition of the island of Santorini.
