Day 2 Welcome to Mars

Wadi Rum Protected Area - Day 2

Welcome the morning in the desert. After breakfast, enjoy a full-day jeep tour with light trekking and hiking. Lunch in the desert with water and tea provided. Dinner and overnight in the camp (if you like, we can prepare comfy mattresses outside for stargazing).

(Please note, the program might change due to weather conditions and group size.)

Here are some possible attractions you might visit (the guide will discuss the tour with you):

Burdah Rock Bridge - Located in the southeast of the protected area, Jabal Burdah and its rock bridge stand 35 meters high. It’s one of the highest rock bridges in the world and a spectacular spot in our desert. If you have vertigo, it’s best to admire it from the valley floor. For those who are reasonably fit, hiking and scrambling up to the bridge is highly rewarding. A scenic Bedouin road takes you to the rock bridge in about 1.5 hours, passing several great viewpoints. Jabal Burdah is home to various medicinal plants. From the rock bridge, you can enjoy incredible desert views.

Jebel Khazali - A narrow cleft in the center of Wadi Rum with Thamudic, Nabatean, and Islamic inscriptions, as well as petroglyphs of humans, animals, and feet.

Wadi Rum - Visit our sand dunes. The desert is dotted with both yellow and red dunes, with the highest dune in Wadi Um Ishrin. We prefer the one near Khazali canyon for its easy climb via rocks on the side. At the top, you’ll have plenty of energy to enjoy the valley views and run down the dune. The intense red of the dune against the deep blue sky is mesmerizing. In this blog, we explore more about dunes and share our top 5 favorites.

Why are there dunes in Wadi Rum desert? Dunes form in deserts and near beaches where there’s lots of loose sand, wind, an obstacle, and a dry climate. Wadi Rum has all these elements.

Wadi Rum - Um Fruth rock bridge. One of the most photographed spots in Wadi Rum, the bridge is about 15 meters up from the desert floor. With guidance and possibly some assistance from your tour guide, the steep climb is manageable. However, it can be challenging for those with vertigo or minor limitations. The narrow bridge can also be tricky, but the stunning views over the yellow mountains of Um Fruth make it worthwhile. Even if you don’t climb the bridge, it’s still worth a visit.

Wadi Rum Protected Area - Little Bridge. This spot is easy to reach and offers a beautiful overview of the valley. It’s also a famous filming location for the blockbuster “Dune.”

Hiking Day

Wadi Rum Protected Area - Good morning tea and hiking. We offer alternative trails on day 3, depending on weather and group size. Trek a part of the Wadi Rum Trail with a local Bedouin.

Jabal Umm Ad Dami - The highest peak in Jordan, near the Saudi border. At the top, you get a panoramic view of the desert and mountains. After lunch, we return to the camp.

Jebel Um Ishrin - Along with Jebel Rum, this mountain flanks the Wadi Rum Valley. The steep red sandstone cliffs of these mountains make Wadi Rum’s red desert famous. It’s also part of the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, one of Wadi Rum’s most recognized rock formations.

Lawrence House & Inscriptions - Hike from our camp to Lawrence House and visit the inscriptions.

Overnight stay and dinner in our camp.

*Tours to be discussed with your guide, depending on group size and conditions.

Transfer back to the camp around 3:00 pm.

Alternatively, you can book a camel ride. We will bring you back to the Rest House in Rum Village.

Goodbye Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum Protected Area - After a delicious Bedouin breakfast, you’ll ride a camel back to the village, where we will take you to the Rest House Wadi Rum or Visitor Center (depending on where you started your tour with us). End of tour around 11 am.

Additional Information

The best way to explore Wadi Rum is by walking & riding
Just like the Ancestors of the Bedouins, who live today in this area you will explore the beautiful nature of the desert.
Wadi Rum is called ‘Mars on earth’ because the blood red sands and the unworldly sandstone mountains create an uncanny Mars-like landscape and environment, making you truly feel like you are stepping foot on another planet, though you are right here on Earth.
Wadi Rum is a Hollywood favorite for films set on the red planet. So far it has served as the backdrop for many Hollywood films like The Martian (2015), The Last Days on Mars (2013) and many other films.

Not just sweeping sand dunes and gargantuan rock mountains, a spectacular series of natural arches, towering cliffs, massive landslides, dramatic cavernous weathering forms and narrow gorges can also be viewed here. Wadi is the Arabic term traditionally referring the bed or valley of a river that is usually dry except in the rainy season.
