Humbling, Haunting, Important - MUST EXPERIENCE - At the time when we went, this was not just the first but the only slavery museum in the US. It tells a history of slavery worldwide, then follows the journey/experiences of enslaved people brought from Africa, sold into slavery in the US, and then the effects decades after the civil war. To try and put words to the weight of the experience does it an injustice; so I'll just say, everyone must go... and contribute so this amazing non-profit can continue to sustain and educate.

An essential experience - We were warned against taking this tour because it would be "too sad," but I think this is a must-visit if you're in New Orleans. The self-guided walking tour was very well-done: engaging, and included multiple voices, including recorded interviews of formally enslaved people from the 1930s. I took my two teen girls and I hope it's an experience they remember forever. The plantation operated until 1975 (not 1875) and the former enslaved persons' cabins were occupied until that time. This is not ancient history by any means.

Great tour - This was a great way to get to the Whitney Plantation if you don’t want to rent a car. Our driver Edward was great and narrated on the drive over so the hour went fast. The bus was very comfortable and the pickup was fast. Appreciated the courtesy call the day before. The Whitney Plantation is a must do for any American. Doing the audio tour made it more intimate I felt.

Great experience - There are a handful of plantations that one can visit in the area around NOLA. Picturesque houses, ones used to film a lot of movies/films, etc. We chose The Whitney Plantation because it focuses on the experience of enslaved people. An extremely important part of history that shouldn’t be ignored. It’s very well done and very powerful. If you wish to visit a plantation during your trip to NOLA definitely check out this place.

Enlightening and well worth the trip. - Phenomenal! The tour is presented from the slaves prospective; It's all about them, where they came from, how they ended up at the plantation and what they had to endure. You will never take a spoon of sugar for granted again after hearing what went into making it. The statues of the children of Whitney will capture your heart. You can take a tour given by a docent, or use a hand held audio guide. Also very informative is the exhibit on the history of slavery located inside the main building.

Very impactful site - Great pickup directly from your hotel, bus is a little rickety but generally fine. The site itself is extremely impactful, focuses on the lives of the enslaved (particularly child slaves).

Powerful and unforgettable experience - Whitney Plantation is a powerful and sobering experience. It's a stark reminder of the horrors of slavery and the resilience of the enslaved people. While the plantation's beauty can't be denied, it's important to remember the painful history behind it. This place is a must-visit for anyone looking to truly understand the complexities of American history.

It is a very sad part of history but it is a far drive from downtown so I expected a bit more details. - I would have liked more details in the structures and a restaurant to have a coffee or even a coffee to buy would be nice. I enjoyed listening to the audio as we walked but had a few different expectations and wish we would have chosen Laura.

Not worth it at all - I don’t know how this is so well reviewed. The bus was late. The suspension on the bus was so shot that you felt every pebble on the road. Every pot hole was a major jolt. The drive was miserable. The plantation itself is okay. It’s all a self guided tour based on a low quality telephone style apparatus. The layout is not great. The history is the only redeeming factor. The tour guide was merely a bus driver. There was no real tour. We should have just rented a car and drove ourselves. Could have saved money and had a better time.
