Additional Information

The Welwitschia plant, often called a ‘living fossil’, is the sole genus of the Welwitschiaceae family and Welwitschiales order, part of the Gnetophyta division. Welwitschia Marbilis is native to the Namid Desert.

This plant bears only two leaves, which continue to grow throughout the plant’s life and are the only leaves the plant will ever grow. These leaves eventually become separated into various strap-shaped portions due to splitting, fraying, and shredding.

The tallest specimens do not exceed 1.5meters in height, though the leaf circumference where they touch the sand can reach beyond 8meters. Some plants are as old as 2000 years!
