Rediscovering Rhode Island: An Autumn Journey Through Time and Color
Drawn by the promise of vibrant fall colors and rich history, I embarked on an autumn tour through Rhode Island’s countryside. Join me as I recount a day filled with nostalgia, beauty, and discovery.
A Journey Through Time and Color
As the wheels of our tour bus began to roll through the Rhode Island countryside, I felt a familiar thrill of anticipation. The crisp autumn air, tinged with the scent of fallen leaves, filled my lungs as I settled into my seat. Our guide, Ted, greeted us with a warm smile and a promise of a day filled with history, beauty, and discovery. His knowledge of the area was evident from the start, and I knew we were in for a treat.
Our first stop was the Scituate Reservoir, a shimmering expanse of water that provides drinking water to much of Rhode Island. As Ted shared stories of the reservoir’s construction and its importance to the state, I couldn’t help but reflect on the countless road trips of my youth, where my family and I would stumble upon hidden gems like this. The reservoir, surrounded by trees ablaze with autumn colors, was a sight to behold, and I felt a deep connection to the land and its history.
Nostalgia in Every Corner
The journey continued to the Swamp Meadow Covered Bridge in Foster, the last of its kind on a public road in Rhode Island. Standing there, I was transported back to a simpler time, when covered bridges were a common sight on the American landscape. The bridge, with its rustic charm, was a perfect backdrop for photos, and I couldn’t resist capturing the moment.
As we traveled to Chepachet village in Glocester, I was reminded of the small towns I visited during my childhood road trips. The Brown & Hopkins Country Store, the oldest in Rhode Island, was a treasure trove of antiques and unique gifts. Walking through its aisles, I felt a sense of nostalgia wash over me, as if I had stepped back in time. The stories Ted shared about the village’s history added depth to the experience, making it more than just a visit to a quaint store.
Embracing the Present
Our final destination was Liberty Farm in Burrillville, where a horse-drawn hayride awaited us. As the wagon meandered through the picturesque woodland, I found myself lost in the beauty of the moment. The gentle sway of the wagon, the sound of hooves on the ground, and the vibrant colors of the trees created a symphony of sensations that was both calming and invigorating.
Meeting the farm animals and picking apples at Dame Farm in Johnston was a delightful end to the day. The simple joy of plucking ripe apples from the tree brought back memories of family outings and the laughter of children. It was a reminder of the importance of cherishing the present while honoring the past.
This autumn tour was more than just a journey through New England’s fall splendor; it was a journey through time, a celebration of history, and a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us. I left with a heart full of gratitude and a renewed appreciation for the road less traveled.
