Not necessarily on the NZ bucket list but very enjoyable - We went to NZ largely as a diehard LOTR nerd but we needed some culture too and the family was geexhausted. Very accessible museum which had a ton of massive exhibits, boats and full size houses, holographic displays and weapons and artifacts. One of our favorites was the immigration section where we found out that none of us would be allowed to immigrate which was sad. There is also a cool earthquake simulation and whole exhibit on the volcanoes in the area. Very educational. We enjoyed it very much. Don’t take a picture of the houses though! The sign that says that is close enough that we had already taken a few by the time we saw it…

Too expensive - The entry price is far too high for this museum. Gorgeous building, some interesting exhibits but whole sections were closed and $35 per person was over the top. We were disappointed

Not Worth the Price for Non-Kiwis - I recently visited Te Papa in Wellington, and while it used to be a free experience for all, they now charge non-Kiwis $35 NZD, which seems excessive for what’s on offer. The museum itself has a lot of empty space, and while some exhibits are nice, none are truly jaw-dropping or memorable. Honestly, for the price, the overall experience felt underwhelming. The front desk staff were a bit off-putting, too. The person who sold me a ticket seemed odd and disengaged. When I mentioned Hawai’i, where I’m from (and a Polynesian culture like Māori), he acted like he’d never heard of it—a strange interaction in a place that celebrates Polynesian history. If you’re a local and get free entry, it might be a different story, but for non-Kiwis, I’d say save your money for another experience in Wellington. All in all, an average (or perhaps even below-average) museum considering the price and what you get in return.
