Temple at Aigina
(Greek á¼Ïαία) was a deity revered solely within this holy precinct. The standing temple, dating back to around 500 BC, was constructed atop the site of a prior temple from around 570 BC, which succumbed to flames around 510 BC. Components of this earlier, incinerated temple were interred in the fill used to level the ground for the newer temple’s broader terrace, thereby preserving them well. Numerous pieces still bear visible remnants of their original coloration. It’s possible that an even earlier temple existed here in the 7th century BC, believed to have been considerably more modest in both design and construction. A significant collection of Late Bronze Age statuettes has been unearthed at this location.
