Highlights
  • Centenary Square - We start here and introduce the tour. We learn a lot about the city from things in and around the Square.
  • Jewellery Quarter - We enter the Jewellery Quarter by a secret canal route that even locals do not use. We learn about the way the Jewellery Quarter developed and the different types of business that developed from Gergian times. We see the way the modern Quarter is taking its place in today’s city.
  • St. Paul’s Church - Known as the Jewellery Quarter church we view the outside of this lovely 1779 example of Georgian architecture.
  • Birmingham Cathedral - We look at this fine English Baroque cathedral. On occasions if there is time and not conflciting events we may go in and experience the Edward Burne-Jones stained glass
  • St. Chad’s Cathedral - We view St Chads from the inner ring road. We appreciate only too well the issues with post-war redevelopment when the car was king. We decide for ourselves if Birmingham has a planned redevelopment.
  • Victoria Square - Having seen St Philip’s Cathedral and lots more in between we return towards the Library of Birmingham by several important city Squares.
  • Chamberlain Square - We see this renovated square and understand more about the way the modern city is reconfiguring for the future.

Bringing Birmingham’s History to Life - Outstanding tour - Jonathan brings Birmingham’s history to life with his knowledgeable and well paced tour from the library, via the canals to the Jewellery Quarter and back through the City Centre ……. all in 2 hrs. His passion for the city is evident through his knowledge of its early industrial past to the more recent 'modern’ era. This tour gave us a fantastic insight into the City’s history and we will definitely be trying on of the other tours. Highly recommend.

I went on a Positively Birmingham Walking Tour of the Jewellery Quarter with Jonathan Berg & he gave us a free copy of his book - This was a great tour of Birmingham Jewellery Quarter walking along the 'Secret Canal' and handling some of the Bham 'Toys' (small metal objects) made in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter. We walked along the canal to Newhall Street past the old Elkington Electroplating Works where Electroplating was invented and we saw the Blue Birmingham Civic Society plaque on the old Birmingham Science Museum where Alexander Parkes invented the first plastic eponymously named "Parkesine". We then crossed Newhall Street by the original Assay Office and into the last Georgian Square left in Birmingham St Paul's Square home to St Paul's Church which is fundraising for a new roof. This is the church where Birmingham industrialists Matthew Boulton and James Watt worshipped. We then walked up Ludgate Hill the site of the last Public hanging in Birmingham commemorated in the "Last Drop" public house. We then walked over the bridge over the A38 Queensway tunnels not for those scared of heights and onto Colmore Row and Birmingham Cathedral St Phillip's where the magnificent Burne Jones stained glass windows are much in evidence. Then via Colmore Row past one of the tallest skyscrapers in Birmingham and the Birmingham Council House and back to the library of Birmingham a good 2 hour walk

A Brilliant Tour with Hidden Treasures - The walking tour with Jonathan of Discovering Birmingham to the Jewellery Quarter was absolutely brilliant and a totally fresh take for me on aspects of a city I know well. Jonathan was energetic, entertaining and hugely knowledgeable. He kept the whole party engaged throughout the tour. I particularly enjoyed stopping off to see the Pickering Foundation's maquettes on Colmore Row- an incredible collection of models by a famous Birmingham artist. They are one of Birmingham's hidden treasures and well worth a visit.

Discovering Birmingham Jewellery Quarter Walking Tour - We met our very friendly, informative and knowledgable tour guide (Jonathan) at the central Birmingham library entrance. The whole group consisted of 7 participants with Jonathan leading us. It was easy to hear everything he said as we were provided with earphones linked to a device worn around the neck with a lanyard. We walked for 2 hours with frequent stops at points of interest where Jonathan would regale us with his very detailed and interesting anecdotes about the history of the area, building, or structure we had arrived at. We covered just over 2.5 miles in distance over the whole tour. It was very leisurely and the time flew by. Along the route Jonathan highlighted a number of public art works including a private viewing of the John Pickering models at 103 Colmore Row. At the end of the walk, Jonathan gave each of us a hardback book to take home featuring photographs and descriptions of items of interest from the walk. We would highly recommend Discovering Birmingham walks to anybody that has a free afternoon and wants to delve into the history of the city. We will certainly be returning for another one soon.

A Glimpse into Birmingham's Sparkling History - Took the 2-hour walking tour to Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter and it was quite enlightening. Our guide was knowledgeable, sharing intriguing facts and stories. The pace was comfortable, allowing us to soak in the sights. The only drawback was the tour's timing; it missed some key open workshops. Nonetheless, it offered a great introduction to a historic part of the city. Highly recommended for those interested in Birmingham's rich heritage.
