Our family trip to Westport House promised a journey back to the 16th century, blending history with engaging activities. Join us as we explore the captivating stories and adventures that await at this remarkable estate.
A Step Back in Time: Discovering Westport House
As a museum curator with a passion for interactive exhibits, I am always on the lookout for experiences that bring history to life in a way that captivates both adults and children. Our family trip to Westport House in Ireland was one such adventure that promised to transport us back to the 16th century, and it did not disappoint.
Upon arriving at Westport House, we were immediately struck by the grandeur of the estate. The house, with its stately architecture and lush gardens, seemed to whisper stories of the past. Built on the foundations of a castle once ruled by the legendary Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley, the house is a testament to centuries of history and architectural evolution. As we embarked on our self-guided tour, the kids were thrilled to explore the 30 rooms open to the public, each offering a glimpse into the lives of those who once called this place home.
The highlight for our family was undoubtedly the dungeons. The kids, with their vivid imaginations, were both fascinated and slightly spooked by the tales of the past. It was a perfect blend of education and entertainment, allowing them to learn about history in a way that was both engaging and memorable.
Engaging with History: The Guided Tour Experience
While the self-guided tour was a delight, we were fortunate enough to join a guided tour led by the charismatic Moirin. Her storytelling brought the history of Westport House to life, weaving tales of the Browne family and their connection to Grace O’Malley. Her humor and passion for the estate were infectious, and even our youngest was captivated by her stories.
Moirin’s tour took us through the grand library, where we paused to take family photos, capturing memories of our day. The library, with its towering shelves and rich woodwork, was a favorite spot for all of us. It was easy to imagine the many generations who had gathered there, surrounded by books and history.
After the tour, we took some time to wander the gardens. The 3.5km looped walk offered stunning views of the estate and the surrounding countryside. It was a peaceful way to reflect on the stories we had heard and to appreciate the beauty of the landscape.
A Day of Fun and Adventure
No family outing is complete without a bit of fun, and Westport House delivered with its archery activity. Channeling our inner Robin Hood, we enjoyed a friendly competition that was suitable for all ages. The staff, with their expertise and encouragement, made the experience enjoyable for everyone, from novice to seasoned archer.
Our day concluded with a meal at Gracy’s, where we indulged in delicious stone-baked pizzas and burgers. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the staff went out of their way to make our meal special. It was the perfect end to a day filled with history, adventure, and family bonding.
Westport House is more than just a historical site; it’s a place where history comes alive, offering a unique blend of education and entertainment.
