Additional Information

With more than 30 rooms open to the public, guests can delve into the history dating back to the 16th century when Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen of Connacht, presided over the land and seas surrounding the estate. The construction of the initial Westport House in 1650, by Colonel John Browne and his wife Maud Burke, was based on one of her many castles - the remnants of which may still be explored in the dungeons today. Grace O’Malley was the great-great-grandmother of Maud Burke.

Subsequent years saw multiple enhancements directed by renowned architects Richard Cassels, James Wyatt, and Thomas Ivory. The estate evolved from a more modest dwelling featuring a single-depth room and an open courtyard into the grand, square structure - adorned with exquisite balustraded terraces - familiar to us today.

What a fantastic place - My wife and I with our grandchildren aged 16 and 7 just returned from Westport Estate where we had a fabulous day. The children loved the new adventure park, both were killed out from the features that interested them, we were able to sit around and because the adventure area has great Wi-Fi we were able to catch up on our news and social media activities. Later my wife and I were able to visit the house while the kids played the foot golf. We opted for the guided tour, which was delivered by very knowledgeable and courteous staff, as indeed were all the staff we met during the day. When we rejoined our grandkids after the tour my younger grandson wanted a trip on the train, which he thoroughly enjoyed. We finished our day by having delicious pizzas at Gracy's restaurant followed by ice-creams from the pink van. All in all it was a great experience which we all really enjoyed.

Great experience - Had an amazing time at Westport house adventure park. Booked morning slots for the activities and there was no long queues. The staff was also very helpful and happy to help. My daughter enjoyed everything and didn’t want to leave. They have also added a large sand pit area for smaller children which was an added bonus.

History brought to life. Excellent tour. - The guided tour was excellent. Dolores our guide was so helpful. She was brilliant. Her knowledge brought alive the whole house. We could imagine what the house was like through the centuries. She had a great sense of humour and kept the whole group entertained. I would highly recommend the tour.

Great story, magnificent house - Considered one of Ireland’s finest houses, Westport House holds many a dark secret behind its walls. It was built in 1650 by Colonel John Browne and Maude Burke, the great-granddaughter of the famous pirate queen Grace O'Malley. They built the house on the ruins of one of the many castles of the scandalous pirate queen. The property itself is already a stunning sight. At Westport House, you will learn very interesting details during a guided tour. If you don't want to join a guided tour, there are enough information boards to delve deep into the history of the house. For my family and me, the stay was a great and rewarding experience!

Interesting - We did the guided tour around the house which was very informative and after the tour could wander around the house at your own leisure. Very interesting history and look forward to returning in a few years to see how the restoration goes.

Lovely tea in the beautiful Westport House - As part of our Coach tour, we were able to stop by the Westport House. We started with a wonderful tour given by one of the local guides, learning about the long history of the House, including the recent restroration process. We were able to enjoy a lovely tea as a part of our tour package. We were served tea, coffee and a great variety of sandwiches and sweets. The grounds were wonderful, including the created lake in the front of the House. There is also an amusement park as well, but we were not able to visit. We were also able to spend some time in the nice town of Westport as well.

Took the house Tour - What a nice tour of the house with a well spoken gentleman that gave us the history. The place is in need of much work so we love the pirate land will finance the renovation.

Thanks to Máirín - Of course it was raining when we went so that never helps! The tour of the house was wonderful, all because of Máirín the tour guide. She was so friendly, enthusiastic, knowledgable, funny, and congratulated us profusely on our recent marriage. As it was raining the house tour was about all we could do so hopefully we will be back at some point to enjoy the place a bit more.

So sad to see the condition of the house. - The house is in a terrible state and it’s actually disgraceful the condition it’s in. It appears to have had no investment in years. From the odd looking waxworks, tables set for current events (perhaps) to desperate signage and poor general repair visible everywhere, it’s just sad to see. The staff on the other hand & guide were lovely & the old news stores from 2017 are a sad inditement on the current reality. You have to do better Westport House.

Rip off. - Awful. Unenjoyable and unsafe. New play park is unsafe and even worse than last one. Embarrassing. Gardens closed. You feel penned in. Not much to see. Rip off
