Next, we ventured into the AH Reed Kauri Park, a sanctuary for the magnificent Kauri trees, which stand as living ancestors of the land. Walking among these giants, I was reminded of the critical role conservation plays in maintaining the biodiversity of our planet. The stories shared by Mervyn and Rangimarie about the Kauri’s history and significance were both enlightening and humbling.

The tour also included a visit to the Mount Parihaka War Memorial, offering breathtaking views over Whangārei City and harbor. Here, we learned about the mountain’s historical importance as the largest Māori Pa site in its day.
