Mae Sai - Your guide and driver will meet you at your Chiang Rai hotel lobby (conditions apply). From there, we head north towards Mae Sai, a 60-kilometre journey that connects Thailand with Thakhilek in Myanmar. On the way, we’ll stop at Baan Wang Lao, one of the few villages where traditional handicrafts remain a primary source of income for residents. Walking through the village with your guide, you’ll see locals showcasing their work, offering a genuine glimpse into Thai culture. Our main destination for this half-day trip is Mae Sai, known as the ‘Northern Most Point of Thailand.’ This small border town, surrounded by mountains, is the only overland border crossing into Myanmar. Its local market is a trading hub where you’ll see a mix of Thais and Burmese along the main street. It’s also a gem lover’s paradise, with various precious stones from Myanmar, such as rubies, emeralds, jade, and more, available for purchase. You’ll have plenty of time to explore and shop. If you decide to buy something, remember to barter – it’s the customary way to trade here, and your haggling skills will likely bring some smiles.
