The Wieliczka Salt Mine is a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has captivated over 40 million visitors. Available for exploration on December 21st and 22nd, the mine offers a journey through time, with tours starting as early as 09:00 and concluding by 19:00. As you descend the 800 steps into the depths, the temperature stabilizes at a cool 14 degrees Celsius, a welcome respite from the heat above. The mine’s labyrinthine corridors reveal chambers adorned with salt sculptures and reliefs, each telling a story of the miners who once toiled here.
“Wow! - An excellent experience with a couple of ‘Wow’ moments. Met at the entrance by our English speaking guide Nicholas who was in charge of our group of around 35. Proceeded down the steps, 380 of them but fairly easy even for elderly people if you are able to walk OK. Lots of information coming from Nicholas along the way, explains the history etc. keep close to your guide otherwise you may miss some information. Having done no research I was astonished at the sight of the cathedral and could easily have stayed longer in the quiet gallery. Passing through the various chambers we were given sufficient time to take photos but bear in mind that there are other groups on your trail too so you do need to keep up. An excellent tour that I would probably do again if I am back there.” - Reviewed on 2024-12-04
