Highlights
  • Sikunir Mountain - Pick-up from your hotel in Yogyakarta at midnight, the journey to Dieng Plateau will take about 3 hours by car. The hike to the Dieng Plateau sunrise viewpoint at the top of Sikunir Hill takes 20-30 minutes from the foot of the path that leads you to the top. On a clear day, you can see up to 8 volcanoes from the top of this hill and sunrise go outside from behind 8 volcano, beautiful moment in that time.

Note: Total Travel time is approximately 6 hours, this is the estimated time for transport to all locations to/from.

  • Batu Ratapan Angin - From the top of Sikunir Hill, you will head to Telaga Warna Lake via Batu Pandang Hill after the Dieng Plateau sunrise. Telaga Warna Lake, or ‘Colourful Lake’, contains water that can change in fluctuating colors. At times, it can be green, purple, yellow or even taking the colors of the rainbow! This phenomenon occurs when the sun hits the water due to its high sulfur content.
  • Sikidang Crater - Visit Sikidang Crater, which is an open sulfur crater with angry bubbling mud and bellowing steam. It’s set among a bumpy and dusty landscape that will make you feel like you arrived on the moon. You will witness a local person boil eggs in the crater and take sulfure.

Additional Information

Our journey begins in Yogyakarta and takes us to the Dieng Plateau to experience the golden sunrise from Sikunir. This misty location, with its sulfurous springs, ancient temples, and colorful lakes, is a true marvel of nature and culture.

We will explore the Arjuna temple, a collection of small Hindu temples dating back to the seventh century. Although there were once 400 temples, only 10 remain today (History of Java: Raffles’s book 1817).

The temples were skillfully crafted by artisans known as Sipi. Before a Sipi could construct a temple for the public, they had to build a small temple in this area and present it to the leader of the Sipi. This is why there were so many temples in this region long ago.

Superb experience - One of the greatest sunrise I have done. Check your weather and make some offerings at shrine for that (pun intended). Driver, Sigit, was punctual, fun and great travel-partner overall if you are solo traveler. The hike to the top of the hill is not-so-much hard, but bring comfy shoes and OUTER (It is COLD, and you need to wait an hour or so to see the rise). Anyway, I would recommend to anyone who love sunrise and a bit of hike. Other visits are also well-designed and give you some more photo-ops.

Perfect day with Atok - We had a perfect excursion to Dieng Plateau, which was ca.3 hours drive from our hotel. The sunrise was beautiful, but dress properly, it is quite chilli up there. We had an excellent guide, Atok, who gave answer to all of our questions, and told many interesting things about the country, the sights, about traditions etc. It was really interesting. He not only drove us to the originally planned places, but he bought local fruit, snake fruit for us, and we also visited a Kopi Luwak coffee shop. It was a great experience with him, he did everything, that we enjoy our journey. Thank you!

In addition, we had a very knowledgeable tour guide, Dani who knows his way around & even brought us to places to satisfy our food cravings & shopping needs. Thank you Dani :)

Great, highly recommended - Sigit was great, he was very friendly and patient in guiding us to the different places on the itinerary. The sunrise experience was beautiful but there was a short (but intense) climb to get to the viewpoint and he was very encouraging in getting us to the top. He also helped us take photos throughout the trip and sent them over at night. They were great! We had a lot of fun and enjoyed the day.

Beautiful sunrise !! Maybe a bit too many people for me - Great organisation. Sigit, driver-guide, was fantastic, on time, well organised. We had good fun as well! I put a 4 on 5, because I was looking for something more in the nature based on the pictures, but there was a lot of people !! Quite touristic tour. So if you don’t mind to be in touristic place ! Do it !!! If you look for something more in the nature I recommand to do the Selogriyo temple, rice terraces and hidden waterfall. Another advice for this tour: take warm clothes. It can be quite cold at 5am on top of mountains waiting for sun rise.
