As I embarked on the Goldfish Experience in Yamato-Koriyama, I was immediately drawn to the historical allure of Koriyama Castle. No visit to Yamato-Koriyama would be complete without experiencing the city’s famous goldfish culture. At the Kochikuya shop, I indulged in the delightful pastime of goldfish scooping, a quintessential summer activity in Japan. The shop offers this experience year-round, allowing visitors to partake in a tradition that is both fun and culturally significant.

The Koriyama Goldfish Museum further enriched my understanding of this unique aspect of Japanese culture. Administered by the Yamato Kingyoen herders association, the museum showcases the history and significance of goldfish in the region. It was fascinating to learn about Masaji Shimata, the founder of the association, who dedicated his life to popularizing the culture of goldfish.

As I left Yamato-Koriyama, I carried with me a newfound appreciation for the city’s rich history and vibrant traditions.
