Jogang River
The Jogang River is situated downstream of the Hangang River, where the Imjingang, Hangang, and Yeseonggang Rivers converge and flow into the West Sea. The name Jogang signifies a “large river” or “grandfather river,” as it appears as vast as the ocean. Before the Korean War, this area was a thriving village with about 100 households. However, after being designated as the “Neutral Waters at Hangang River Estuary” in the 1953 ceasefire agreement, the residents were displaced. Over the years, the Jogang River Basin, once abandoned, has become a haven for a diverse ecosystem and numerous endangered and protected species.
