Day Trip – Garni, Geghard, Lavash Baking, the Gorge “Symphony of Stones”
Charent’s Arch - Located at one of the passes along the road, the Arch of Charents (designed by architect R. Israelian in 1957) offers a stunning view of the Ararat Valley with Mount Ararat (also known as Masis) rising in the distance.
Garni Temple - This incredible tour will introduce you to Armenia’s exotic Pagan history and the subsequent development and spread of Christianity. Garni Temple (77 A.D.) is the only remaining pagan temple in the entire post-Soviet region. A short 10-minute walk from the temple leads to a charming local restaurant with a spectacular view of the temple, where you can relax and participate in a master class on tasting freshly baked lavash, the traditional Armenian flatbread.
The Monastery of Geghard - The Geghard Monastery complex is another historical site included in this tour. St. Geghard represents the lance used by the Roman centurion to pierce Jesus after the crucifixion.
Symphony of Stones - This stop is available only in favorable weather conditions.
Day Trip - Khor Virap, Noravank Monasteries, Areni Cave, Wine Tasting
Khor Virap - The Khor Virap Monastery is about an hour’s drive from Yerevan and offers a breathtaking view of Armenia’s iconic symbol, the majestic Mount Ararat. “Khor Virap” means “deep dungeon” and was built on the site of the former royal prison at the historical location of Artashat. This prison held Gregory the Illuminator, the first Armenian Catholicos, for 13 years. It is no wonder that this site is one of the most sacred places for Armenians worldwide. Additionally, it is the closest point to Mount Ararat from Armenia, often becoming the top reason to visit the country!
Areni - Areni – 1 “Birds” Cave. In 2008, archaeologists discovered some of the world’s oldest artifacts, including a leather shoe and a winery. The site, overlooking the Arpa River near the town of Areni, is believed to date primarily to the Early Bronze Age (around 5,000-6,000 years ago). It also contains evidence of elaborate burial rituals and agricultural practices.
Noravank Monastery - This is one of the jewels of medieval Armenian architecture, situated high among the stunning brick-red cliffs at the end of the Gnishik Canyon. Here, you will find the only depiction of God the Father in Armenia, as astonishing as the face of Jesus Christ that appeared on the dome of the Church’s narthex. Built by the Orbelian noblemen, it stands out among Armenian churches as the sepulcher of this noble family, making it unique since burying people inside a church has been prohibited since the 5th century.
Areni - As the “finishing touch” to this tour, you will have the opportunity to taste and even purchase Armenia’s famous Areni wine, made from the oldest grape variety in the world.
