Rabati Castle - Dating back to the 9th century, Rabati Castle is a prominent landmark in Akhaltsikhe, the capital of Samtskhe-Javakheti in Southern Georgia. The town’s name translates to “new fortress,” and it was established in the Middle Ages, with the first mentions in the 12th century chronicles. Rabati served as a defensive structure for the region, strategically built on a high hill for visibility from any point in the city. Nearby, visitors can find the Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum, an Orthodox church, a citadel, a mosque, and various tourist attractions such as restaurants, cafes, hotels, and a marriage hall. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Rabati Castle was expanded to become the residence of the Jaqeli dynasty. It underwent significant renovations in 2011-2012.
Vardzia - Established in the 12th century, Vardzia is a remarkable cave town and one of Georgia’s most significant historic monuments. It is located at an altitude of 1300 meters above sea level, 100 meters above the foothills of the Erusheti Mountain. The complex once featured 13 floors interconnected by a sophisticated system of tunnels, including living quarters, refectories, barns, wine storage facilities (marani), and libraries. Vardzia had a potable water supply and a sewerage system. The carved monastery is part of the Vardzia Historical Architectural Museum Reserve, offering an incredible exploration opportunity for history and culture enthusiasts.
