- Monastery Sevanavank - The Sevanavank Monastery complex is located on the Sevan peninsula. Founded in 305 by St. Gregory the Illuminator, it was built on the site of a former pagan temple. In the 9th century, the Syunik princes established Sevan as a strategic point. In 874, Mariam, the wife of Prince Vassak of Syunik and daughter of King Ashot Bagratuni, constructed two churches here—St. Arakeloc and St. Astvatsatsin. These churches are adorned with intricately carved wooden capitals, some of which are preserved in the Armenian State Museum of History and the Art Gallery of St. Petersburg (Hermitage). In 1869, a spiritual school was established within the complex. The remnants of a church with a domed hall can still be seen atop the island’s mountain. The monastery grounds are rich with khachkars (cross-stones).
