The tour kicks off in the morning, with the first stop at Garni Temple. This remarkable structure, perched on a triangular cape, is the sole surviving example of pagan culture in Armenia, showcasing a fusion of Greco-Roman and Armenian architectural styles. King Trdat the First initiated its construction in the first century A.D., dedicating it to the Sun God. After the adoption of Christianity in 301, the temple’s significance waned, and the Garni fortress became the summer residence for kings. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of the royal palace and a bathhouse featuring exquisite mosaic work near the temple.
Geghard Monastery is an unparalleled masterpiece of 13th-century Armenian architecture. Some of the complex’s churches are intricately carved into a massive rock. Initially known as Ayrivank (cave monastery), it was later renamed Geghard (lance) because the lance used by a Roman soldier to pierce Jesus Christ’s side was preserved here for many centuries. Geghardavank’s unique construction makes it an ideal venue for singing spiritual hymns. The complex is adorned with delicate sculptural decorations and numerous impressive khachkars (cross-stones).
Participants will also enjoy a Lavash baking masterclass. Lavash is a traditional Armenian flatbread. In 2014, “Lavash, the preparation, meaning, and appearance of traditional Armenian bread as an expression of culture” was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
