This area is defined by five notable buildings:
- The National Art Gallery and History Museum of Armenia, housing approximately 400,000 exhibits that span the entire history of the Armenian people from ancient times to the present.
- The Government House of the Republic of Armenia, featuring the country’s main clock with bells on its tower.
- The Central Post Office of the Republic of Armenia, offering telegraph services, long-distance calls, currency exchange, postcards, and package services.
- The “Mariott Armenia” hotel, which warmly welcomes Yerevan’s guests and, despite its authentic architecture, offers the most modern amenities.
- The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources.
- Saint Gregory The Illuminator Cathedral - St Grigor Lusavorich Cathedral symbolizes the 1700th anniversary of Christianity’s adoption as a state religion in Armenia and honors St Gregory, the illuminator, who introduced Christianity to the country.
- Vernissage Market - Vernissage is Yerevan’s largest flea market, open year-round. It offers souvenirs from the Soviet era to modern times, along with handmade crafts in various themes and colors.
- Charent’s Arch - Charents Arch is situated near Yerevan, between the pagan temple of Garni and the Geghard Christian monastery complex in the village of Vokhchaberd.
- Garni Gorge - Garni Canyon, also known as “Symphony of Stones” or “Basalt Organ,” is renowned for its stunning natural rock formations. The gorge features massive, symmetrically arranged hexagonal and pentagonal basalt columns (nearly 50 meters high) that resemble an organ, hence the name “Basalt Organ Pipes.”
- The Monastery of Geghard - Geghard Monastery is a masterpiece of medieval Armenian architecture, entirely carved out of a cave. Founded in the 4th century AD at the site of a sacred spring, the monastery’s name, Geghard (spear), is derived from the spear that pierced Jesus Christ on the cross, now housed in the Echmiadzin museum. The Geghard Monastery complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Garni Temple - Constructed in the latter half of the 1st century by King Trdat III, the Garni Temple is the only surviving pagan temple in Armenia. After Christianity’s adoption, it became the summer residence of Khosrovadukht, King Trdat III’s sister. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1679, remnants of its elegant columns and wall stones are scattered around the site. It is believed the temple was dedicated to Mithra, the Sun God.
