  • Berrick Hall - We will choose one or two properties to visit, among many historical architectures and residences in the area of YAMATE BLUFF. (Berrick Hall could be one of them)
  • The Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery - This spot is very symbolic place to see how Yokohama started as the first contact point with the international society 150 years ago.
  • Yokohama Motomachi Shopping Street - This shopping street used to be the “bridge” between the local people of Yokohama and the newly joined foreign residents. We can still feel the unique atmosphere of the street and the attractive shops with long history. Both the old and new shops are the appropriate destination to find the best souvenirs and gifts for the guests. Plus we will be able to have the relaxing time with the authentic Japanese tea.

Additional Information

The tour is by Sayumi, the Official Kanagawa Tour Guide. Starting from Motomachi-Chukagai station, we will go up to Harbor View Park (by escalator) for the best photoshoot of the port for your Yokohama memory. Visit Yamate Bluff, where the foreign residents stayed after the opening of the port 150 years ago, which keeps its historical view, architectural style, and friendly atmosphere until today. Studio Ghibli’s movie “From Up on Poppy Hill” is located here, too, so we will be able to visit some familiar spots from the movie. After having a relaxing teatime at the popular authentic Japanese tea salon, we will explore Motomachi, the original high street built back around the time of the opening of the port, full of unique and fashionable shops best for gifts and souvenirs. The final destination is Sankeien, 20 minutes from Motomachi by bus. You can enjoy the beauty of the traditional Japanese architecture and garden collection that provides every ‘chic’ from all over Japan.

  • It’s a normal walk around town, but there are some ups and downs.

an in-depth history lesson experience - Our guide's love and knowledge of Yokohama made the tour all the more memorable and fun! It was amazing to see how an unimportant village just facing the Pacific Ocean became the world’s renowned Port City in the past 165 years. Every alley had a story to be told, stories you would not have known unless you were raised in the city. Thank you for sharing your insights, Sayumi-san! Just as you had told us, the Sankei-en gardens was magnificent as well! Kyoto, Kamakura and Shirakawa-go heritage combined in one place, so close to Tokyo! Just enjoyed them and your explanation of each buildings or structures really got me interested in Japan. Thank you!

We enjoyed wonderful Three-Story of Pagoda and a lot of historical Japanese Architectures and Mt. Fuji over the industrial area and port of Yokohama from observatory. Tour was conducted by a small group and we could keep our time. Sayumi guided us with full of hospitality. Thank you very much!

Very satisfied! - Superbly coordinated half-day city tour. At Sankei-en gardens, I felt the aesthetics of the Japanese spirit (not assertive but deeply penetrating into the mind, for example) from historical and cultural buildings gathered from various places in Japan. Thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful landscape while walking around the spacious Japanese-style garden without getting lost, thanks to the knowledgeful guide. As a contrast, the characteristics of the City of Yokohama which accommodated many foreigners from early times could be felt at Harbor View Park, Yamate Area, and Motomachi Shopping Street. So well-organized, I was able to enjoy such colorful experience time-efficiently, but never rushed. Recommended!
