A thorough review, including accessibility. York Dungeons is phenomenal, as are the people who work there! - Fantastic place to be! This place is filled with talented actors & actresses, kind people who are more than happy to help, hilarious jokes, creepy moments, a lil history (think horrible history) and even some down right terrifying moments! They use special effects like you'd experience in a 4D cinema; think water spray, air spray, things moving. Each room is different, some are hilarious & fun, others are creepy & fun, and 1/2 are terrifying and fun! There is some wonderful audience participation ranging from asking your name & making fun of it, to locking you in a cage, and i won't spoil the rest. Heads up for claustrophobia, there is a very very short area of which you have to crouch under that i personally couldn't cope with (but survived, with the patience of our lovely guide!), that is purely to lead you to another area. I do believe if you have some idea of this, speaking to the staff, they are all so lovely they would try to accommodate you! Another heads up - the tickets are NONE REFUNDABLE and it says so on the website (which it's cheaper to buy from). If you are disabled and need a carer, your carer gets in free, however they may ask you to prove this through a carers card, proof of P.I.P. and so on. This is a grade 2 listed building, so they are unable to make it completely accessible (unable to accommodate electric wheelchairs & scooters) but they do have 1 manual chair (you need to either be able to self propel or have someone in your party push you), and only 1 at a time for fire, health and safety reasons. This being said, they are more accessible than you'd expect, with stairlifts on the stairs, so you wouldn't be stuck! The floors are often uneven, so if you are unsteady, it would be worth having a walking stick, crutches or a very strong friend to stabilise you! They also will supply you with ear defenders (did not fit my adult head but fit my large child's) and also a yellow sticker (glow in the dark so the actors can see) if you request, and the function of this is to let the actors know you don't want to take part in the audience participation. My experience of this was (my partner) wasn't completely ignored, they were addressed a couple of times, but they were not picked out to participate in the more hands on parts of the show. They do have a section of the show that has strobe lights, but they always ask before entering if anyone has photo sensitive epilepsy, so you can easily avoid this room if you are photosensitive (even if it would cause a migraine). They also towards the end will ask if you have any back or leg issues, this will simply affect where they place you in this specific room. In my opinion the experience you get at this horrible history style, scary, immersive theatrical experience is well worth the money. Whilst £20+ per person may sound steep, the actors & actresses always give it their all regardless of how many of you there are, there are fun special effects, interesting & hilarious storylines & participation and the overall ambience is fantastic. Under 5 years old is not allowed, under 8 is not recommended but is allowed (as children are subjective), under 18's must have a guardian and around 16-17 year olds must have proof of age or I believe a permission letter from a parent/guardian. These fantastic actors & actresses cannot touch you (so PLEASE dont touch them), they will not chase you but will jumpscare you at points - so PLEASE do not come if you are aware your sudden fear response is a violent act like hitting (they don't deserve that, they're just trying to give us all a great time). They have normal toilets and an accessible one. You get pics at the beginning, can see them at the end at a bit of a steep price, however it is a novelty, and novelties often are. They also have a pretty cool gift shop! Last but not least, they also do a really fun 18+ tour on Saturday's (though I'm unsure if this is a regular or temporary thing), which has immaculate vibes. If you listen, engage and go to have fun you will have an amazing time! I can't thank the amazing staff enough, keep up the amazing work!

Great visit - Visited today as we have Merlin passes and were in York. This was also our first ever visit to one of the Dungeons and wow! What a great experience.
We all had such a good time. Our 6 year old was a little freaked out by a couple of the bits where it goes dark but she still said she loved it!

Would definitely go again! - Absolutely loved this experience! Good actors who portrayed the part well! More funny than scary, but I’m all for that.

Great shows but too many in group. - Our second time at the dungeons and thought the actors were brilliant! Enjoyed the shows but also felt that there were just a few too many people crammed in to the group. It would be much better if the actors asked the tall people to stand at the back as for us smaller people, it was difficult to see as we all crammed into the rooms. Would recommend a visit though 👍
