- Tyne Cot Cemetery - After traversing the battlefields of Passchendaele, visitors arrive at the stunning Tyne Cot Cemetery. With 12,000 graves, it stands as the largest British and Commonwealth war grave cemetery globally. The Tyne Cot Memorial wall at the cemeteryās rear lists the names of an additional 35,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who are missing with no known grave. A serene place for reflection and remembrance.
- St. Julien Canadian 2āæįµ Battle of Ypres Memorial (The Brooding Soldier) - This iconic Canadian monument and garden, āThe Brooding Soldier,ā honors the Canadian soldiers lost in the 1915 gas attacks. Here, visitors learn about the 1915 gas attacks and the history of chemical warfare in the Ypres Salient. It is arguably the most iconic memorial in the Ypres Salient, set in a beautiful memorial garden.
- Langemark Cemetery - As the second largest German cemetery in the area, Langemark, with 44,000 burials, offers a distinct atmosphere compared to British and Commonwealth cemeteries. Its design was significantly influenced by the Nazis of WWII, some of which is still evident today. The mass grave at the cemeteryās center is astonishing in scale. This site is a āmust-seeā in the area. Before the tour, consider purchasing the book āStudentenfriedhof to Soldatenfriedhof,ā written in English, for a fascinating insight into the cemeteryās history.
- Essex Farm Cemetery - Visit the preserved dressing station bunkers to learn about the wounded evacuation process and the memorial to Lt Col John McCrae, where the story of the āIn Flanders Fieldsā poem and its impact on remembrance today is shared. Visitors will also see the grave of Valentine Strudwick, who was killed at age 15, and learn about underage soldiers in the Great War.
- Passchendaele Museum - Discover the world-class Passchendaele Museum, featuring replica British and German trenches, an underground replica dugout experience, and its new Battle of Passchendaele immersive room. The museum focuses on the Battle of Passchendaele and its combatants. A popular stop on the tour, the museum is being updated for 2025. A fantastic visit.
- Hill 60 - Known as āThe Murder Hillā by British soldiers, visitors walk over its sacred preserved battlefield, bunkers, and mine craters. Hill 60 is now an official war grave, as many soldiers and tunnellersā remains lie beneath its surface. The story of the fierce fighting at Hill 60 is legendary, with its high casualty rate and compact battlefield where men were often separated by only a few meters. Discussions here cover the battles of 1915 and 1917, the underground war, and the fighting on the hill during WWII.
- Caterpillar Mine Crater (Hill 60 B) - Learn about the Battle of Messines Ridge and the underground war at the awe-inspiring Caterpillar Crater site. Of the 19 massive underground mines detonated by British and Commonwealth tunnellers on June 7th, 1917, the Caterpillar Crater is the best-preserved. Its breathtaking scale and beauty starkly contrast the horrors that occurred there during the Great War.
