Wonderful day in Varazdin and Trakoscan - and cultureMaya gave us a wonderful trip to Varazdin and Trakoscan Castle. She picked us up right on time and we were off in her car to Veazdin. Not only was she an excellent driver but she gave us a running commentary on the countryside, what we would see and Croatian culture, She gave us a very detailed tour of the charming town of Varazdin and recommended a fabulous cafe for coffee and cake. Then we were off to Trakoscan Castle where she provided a wonderful and detailed tour of the castle. This tour was one of our highlights of Croatia.

Peaceful Day Trip - Maja was a great guide and the trip was so peaceful. There were only four of us and when we went to the castle on the hill we were the only ones in the castle, the whole time! Maja had umbrellas ready for if it rained, and the trip was flexible to our needs. She kept things on a good schedule without us feeling rushed. Beautiful sites on this day trip, I do highly recommend it. A great way to see a relatively undiscovered (for foreigners) part of Croatia.

Wonderful Day Trip to Varazdin and Trakoscan Castle - It was a wonderful small tour day trip to Varazdin and Trakoscan Castle. The scenery was magnificent and the views outstanding. But, I will also remember the excellent conversations that our group had with our tour leader. We discussed quite a bit of history (from ancient times all the way up to modern Croatia) during the tour. This was the type of day that makes vacations worth while. I look forward to another tour with this company and in particular our tour leader.

Ying and yang - Maja is a wonderful guide with patience, knowledge and understanding. While I thought the castle part was bland, the Varazdin part was really wonderful with its many churches, colorful buildings, and, of course, angels.

Interesting to see how the town walls (now gone) defended the city / Castle - we started two different tours (city & castle). This city was once the Capital of Croatia between 1756 & 1776, when a big fire burnt down much of the city, and the capital of the country was moved to Zagreb. Today this town is a beautifully preserved Baroque city that’s often compared to Vienna, and unlike Zagreb there are NO mass transport trams running around this small community. For centuries, this was the home of several aristocratic families, who built magnificent palaces and churches that continue to grace the city today. Originally this was a walled city surrounded by earthen fortification walls and a massive moat totally around the town, and a separate moat around the castle within the city. The defenses were emplaced to fend off (never happened) an Ottoman empire attack. The moat design would prevent tunneling under the city defensive walls. Today the moat area is mostly filled in! The castle was originally a military barracks / defense keep for the defenders to fall back on; and then converted into a royal palace for the Hungarian governor once the Ottoman threat went away. We started our guided 45-minute walking tour of the town itself. Tom enjoyed the detail in the Baroque architecture of this town some call “Little Vienna.” We then went on a tour of the castle surrounded by a now empty moat (entering via drawbridge). The Castle is now owned and managed by the town after the last residence left in 1929. The last residence basically emptied the structure, and over the years donations of equipment /armament /furniture has now filled the attraction. The castle was built in the twelfth century and was used as a seat of local government until 1925. We had an hour-long tour by one of the most excellent museum curators
