Duration: 3 hours
Cancellation: 3 days learn more
Highlights

You will be picked up from your hotel and driven to the excursion spot.

The Aldabra Giant Tortoise sanctuary is a major tourist lure and the oldest tortoise is 192 years old. The turtles are not indigenous and are magisterial creatures, weighing in at an average of 200 kg some are as old as over 100 years (4 turtles are 150 years). You can feed them at a fee paid at the Island, but watch out for their snapping beaks.

Other marine life is also reasonably rich and Changuu provides good snorkelling. It is by no means the most extensive or varied snorkelling spot off the coast of Zanzibar, but being so close to Stone Town and so easily accessible makes it ideal for those who want to see ‘under the sea’ a little while on a city break.

The island’s restaurant, Matthews, is good and well-renowned. This is especially so considering the restaurant’s charming atmosphere and good sea view.

You will then be dropped off at the hotel after the excursion.

Additional Information

Changuu Island, also known as Prison Island, is located about 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town. Originally owned by an Arab, the island was used to confine unruly slaves, though no prisoners were ever actually kept there. Instead, it became a quarantine station during yellow fever outbreaks. General Lloyd Mathews purchased the island, and in 1893, the prison (gaol) that still stands today was constructed, giving the island its name, “PRISON ISLAND.”

In 1919, the British governor of Seychelles gifted four Aldabra giant tortoises to Changuu. Today, this species is considered vulnerable and is listed on the IUCN Red List. A dedicated foundation on the island ensures the tortoises’ well-being.

This tour includes a visit to the historic Prison Island, home to giant land tortoises. While on the island, you can observe and feed the tortoises, swim, sunbathe, and snorkel.

  • May be operated by a multi-lingual guide
  • Bring towels and swimming suit
  • Snorkeling is optional (bring own gears)

Prison Island was lovely. - I really loved the entire island. The tortoises were interesting but the museum outlined the history in an interesting and fascinating way. The shop was one of the best I've seen with a large variety of items. The pace was leisurely. We never felt hurried even though the island got a little crowded as the day went by. I would recommend arriving as early as possible to avoid the crowds.

Great experience - I was there twice, and would definitely go again. Excellent place for swimming/snorkelling, mesmerising ocean views from what was intended to be a prison, great fun interacting with those giant tortoises! It doesn't really matter which guide you decide to go with, the program is the same for everybody.

Prison Island Tour and Snorkelling - Our host for the tour was Ahmada. He was excellent, great customer service and very knowledgable. We were collected from our hotel and returned as part of the cost and the island itself is a must see if you are travelling to Zanzibar! I would highly recommend this trip and ask for Ahmada if you are going. 5*.

Good, but be prepared - Turtle Island was fascinating. The boat ride out was also an adventure. Our guide was very friendly and excellent. However, Viator Should have notified people that they must Be prepared to walk out in a foot of water to the boat, therefore shorts or raised pants legs are mandatory.. Also, the boat trip out to the island had very rough water which guests should be prepared for.

Prison island again - Thou I have visited Prison island a few times already, it’s always nice to see it through another’s eyes. The trip through small boats is safe, we travelled with young children under 10 years. What I noticed was the water current is higher toward the end of the day, so perhaps not the very ideal time to travel! The peacock addition makes the place even more interesting!

Don’t do it - What a terrible experience. When we got to the island our tour guide explained the most obvious things such as: turtles like water. When we proceeded to visit the prison part of the island the trainee couldn’t explain anything. He could barely speak english. What we learned about the place we read at the entrance. He couldn’t answer basic questions such as “when was the prison built”. I would say paying for a guide here is a rip off. Just try to get a boat at the marine that takes you there and se the prison and pay for the turtle part yourself. When we were getting out it was so windy there were a lot of waves, we couldn’t even snorkel. So definitely go in the morning
