Review of guided Stonetown tour - I did a private 2,5 hour tour with Mohammed. He told me about Stonetown's history as we strolled the streets and alleys at a slow pace. At first, I thought 2-3 hours sounded long but it went quickly. I especially enjoyed the Darajani Market where it was nice to have a guide. I'm glad I took the tour. It was interesting to learn about the different beautiful doors.

Amazing experience in Stone Town! - The Stone Town city tour with Muhammed was an incredible experience. Muhammed is a kind, thoughtfull and very professional guide, which I can recommend to absolutely everyone. Before he started the tour he deliberately asked us several questions in order to gain enough information to adjust the tour exactly to our needs and wishes. Experiencing all the different markets (clothing, fish, meat, vegetable, fruit, spices and so on) really was an adventure. We tasted numorous things and above all we learned so much through Muhammeds input. Next up we went roaming the streets of Stone Town where we were amazed by the friendly people, the 'maze like' narrow streets, local music performances and beautiful architecture. Muhammeds cultural and historical knowledge of Stone Town as well as Zanzibar as a whole, made us learn and comprehend to how it became what it is today. After that we visited the museum in which the slave trade era is depicted, painful to watch but very important to reflect upon. Eventually we ended up in Foodhani park for the jump spot but the delicious food market was the icing on the cake! Muhammed really inspired us to dive deeper into the history and the culture of Zanzibar and he gave us very valuable suggestions for books and scholars to read into. I can't thank Muhammed enough for his knowledge and kindness!

Best guide: Like being on a trip with a friend. - Mohammed took us on a terrific tour. We were very interested in the culture and history of Stone Town. So Mohammed first took us to the new part of Stone Town to experience the market where the Zanzibari shop and not as many tourist come. The market is open every day and you can find everything there if you like to haggle a bit. The vibe is nice. If you cross the street, you will find the old part of Stone Town and its market which attracts a lot of tourists because of the spice market. On our request Mohammed brought us to the fish market where we witnessed the auction of fish. The place was stacked with all kind of fish and fishermen. It is absolutely impressive. At the fruit market Mohammed told us about all kind of fruits, we never saw before. Small red banana's and some sort of mini mangoes. We bought one to taste, amazing! After that Mohammed took us through the streets of Stonetown and told us about the mix of architecture and historic influences. We also visited the slave market where Mohammed told us about the dark history of Zanzibar as a slave trading hub. He showed us the chambers where slaves were held under horrible circumstances. It was painful to hear and read the stories, but it is good to know and never forget. Mohammed is a good teller and explains everything so patiently. We took our time at the museum and Mohammed was always nearby to answer our questions. After that Mohammed showed us some old walls, the house where Freddy Mercury was born and a wonderfull little square where Zanzibari sing and come together to share culture. It was fun to be there, an absolute must. We finished our tour with a visit to the food market where we ate a great shoarma and drank the best sugar cane juice with ginger and lime ever. The people are very nice. I asked the sugar cane man if I could have a try at the sugarcane press and he let me try it. We laughed because it is not easy to press sugarcane. All and all the whole tour was a wonderful experience. Mohammed has a lot of knowledge and a great sense of humor, it is like being on a tour with a friend.
