This picturesque area has been a residence for people since ancient times. Its abundant, pristine water springs is a major reason for its habitation. The regional history museum holds a collection of coins from the 2nd and 3rd century AD when the initial locals, the Thracians, resided under Roman authority. An array of Thracian funeral pottery and ornaments, unearthed during various diggings, can be seen too. The remains of a fortress on an adjacent hill, known as ‘Vida’, are also remnants of the Roman period.
