Additional Information

Discover Colombia’s first Wonder - The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá.

For centuries, the native inhabitants extracted salt from Zipaquirá. This resource enabled them to trade for gold, food, feathers, etc. This commerce transformed their world, granting them immense wealth, which lured the initial Spanish settlers.

The dawn of the 19th century introduced machine-powered salt extraction. Owing to their strong devotional beliefs, the miners had a dedicated place for prayer. This area gradually grew in size. In 1995, the subterranean cathedral resumed welcoming visitors, showcasing added rooms, sculptures, and grandeur.

Fascinating! - A wonderful insight into the history of the Zipaquirá Cathedral and how it was formed. I'm glad I did the tour in the morning (Saturday) as the site got rather busy in the afternoon with long queues. Due to the traffic, the journey seemed quite long but nevertheless, I enjoyed the day. As a tip, you may wish to bring your own headphones so you can listen to the audio without holding and putting the device to your ear. As a tour guide, Javier was very polite, courteous and knowledgeable in the history of Bogotá and I would most certainly use him again if I ever returned to this city.
