- Catedral de Sal de Zipaquira - This Cathedral is a remarkable structure built within the mines, showcasing the impressive architecture of this significant cultural and religious landmark.
This is a place that offers a break from the ordinary, encouraging reflection, self-discovery, and personal connection.
The Via Crucis can be found in the initial section of the underground path, which stretches 386 meters long and 13 meters high, featuring 14 Stations of the Cross. These stations, carved in Rock Salt by the miners, depict the various stages experienced by Jesus leading up to his crucifixion and burial.
The dome is where the tunnel from the 14 Stations meets the first visual encounter with the Great Central Chamber of the Salt Cathedral. The World’s Largest Carved Cross is just 145 meters away.
Amazing!
- Plaza de la Independencia - Opened in 2010, this plaza was formerly the site of the Market Square. At its center stands a statue of Antonio Nariño holding a book symbolizing the Human Rights of the people, with a time capsule beneath it. The flags represent the countries liberated by Bolívar.
- Plaza de los Comuneros - This colonial square is one of Zipaquirá’s most iconic spaces, also known as Plaza Mayor and Plaza González Forero.
In the Plaza de los Comuneros, you’ll find the Diocesan Cathedral, the Government House, the Municipal Palace, the Municipal Council hall, and the Bishop’s House, among other sites. The colonial architecture is a key attraction of these locations.
The name Plaza de los Comuneros commemorates the first revolution in America and the birthplace of freedom in the new world. Nearly 20,000 men gathered here, led by Juan Francisco Berbeo from Socorro, Santander, to sign the capitulations.
The Plaza was paved in 1823 and underwent renovations in 1938 with the addition of a central fountain. The Diocesan Cathedral, a prominent feature of the square, was inaugurated and consecrated on November 9, 1916. Its interior decoration was completed in 1937.
- Centro Cultural Casa del Nobel Gabriel Garcia Marquez - This house, built in the 19th century by Scottish engineer Alejandro Mac Doual, is where his son, the distinguished poet Don Roberto Mac Douall Durán, was born.
- Estacion de Zipaquira - Declared a national architectural heritage site, this station was a key commercial and industrial hub in the country’s center during the train boom from the 1920s to the 1970s.
In 1926, under the presidency of General Pedro Nel Ospina, construction began on the building known as the Tres Esquinas station, designed in a French neoclassical style. It was part of the route to the north of the Sabana Railroad. On December 8, 1927, it was inaugurated with the presence of various government officials, marking a significant milestone in the city’s development.
