Exploring Ethiopia’s Hidden Gem: A Day at Lake Ziway
Eager to explore the rich biodiversity and cultural heritage of Ethiopia, I embarked on a thrilling day trip to Lake Ziway. Join me as I recount my encounters with rare birds, majestic hippos, and the vibrant Zai culture.
A Journey Through Ethiopia’s Rift Valley
The journey from Addis Ababa to Lake Ziway is a visual feast, a two-hour drive that takes you through the heart of Ethiopia’s Rift Valley. As we left the bustling city behind, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of rolling hills and expansive plains, dotted with acacia trees and small villages. The air was crisp, and the anticipation of what lay ahead was palpable. Our guide, Bre, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing stories of the land and its people, making the journey as enriching as the destination itself.
As a wildlife photographer, I was particularly excited about the prospect of capturing the diverse birdlife that Lake Ziway is renowned for. The lake, one of the largest in Ethiopia, is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 25 species of birds calling it home. From the elegant African Pygmy Goose to the striking Saddle-billed Stork, each sighting was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that Africa has to offer. The highlight, however, was spotting the rare Wattled Crane, a majestic bird that stands nearly six feet tall. It was a moment that took my breath away and one that I was fortunate enough to capture through my lens.
Encountering the Giants of Lake Ziway
Our adventure continued with a boat trip to Gelila Island, where we hoped to catch a glimpse of the lake’s resident hippos. As we glided across the water, the tranquility of the lake was occasionally interrupted by the distant call of a fish eagle or the splash of a jumping fish. The anticipation grew as we approached the island, and soon enough, we were rewarded with the sight of a family of hippos basking in the sun. These gentle giants, with their massive bodies and endearing eyes, were a sight to behold. Observing them in their natural habitat was a humbling experience, a reminder of the importance of preserving these ecosystems for future generations.
The boat trip also offered a unique perspective of the lake’s islands, each with its own story to tell. We visited the Church of Maryam Tsion, a site steeped in history and legend. It is said that the Ark of the Covenant was once hidden here to protect it from invaders. Walking around the island, surrounded by the serene beauty of the lake, I felt a deep connection to the past and a renewed appreciation for the cultural heritage of the Zai people.
Embracing the Culture of the Zai People
The final leg of our journey took us to the local communities that call the shores of Lake Ziway home. The Zai people, with their rich traditions and vibrant culture, welcomed us with open arms. We had the opportunity to learn about their way of life, from traditional fishing techniques to the art of crafting intricate baskets. It was a chance to engage with a community that has lived in harmony with nature for generations, a testament to the sustainable practices that are at the heart of their existence.
As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the experiences that had unfolded. The Day Trip to Lake Ziway was more than just a journey through breathtaking landscapes; it was an exploration of the delicate balance between nature and culture. It was a reminder of the importance of sustainable travel, of treading lightly and leaving a positive impact on the places we visit. For those seeking an adventure that combines wildlife, culture, and a commitment to conservation, I cannot recommend this experience enough. Day Trip to Lake Ziway
