Very worthwile tour - It was a great way to spend a rainy afternoon. About 1:15 hour drive out to the countryside. The chocolate factory was a lot of fun-it was self guided and interactive. You have the opportunity to sample from chocolate fountains and there are samples of their products at the end. In the gift shop you can build and buy your own custom giant candybar. The kids on the tour loved that the most! Next on to the cheese factory a 15 or 20minute drive down the road. It was also self-guided and very interesting to me as a fan of cows and cheese. Samples are also part of this tour. It has a small cafe type dining area as part of the gift shop where you can sit and eat the fresh cheese you just purchased (beverages are also available) Next on to the pictuesque alpine village Apenzell. We had about an hour here to explore the town . Shop , grab a bite or sample the beer at the local microbrewery ocross from the parking lot from where the bus parked. From there another 1.5 hour or so drive back to Zurich. Our driver Tony was great and very informative. My only complaint is that it would have been nice to have 30 more minutes at each stop. Since the tours were selfguided and required a lot of reading to get the full story we had to pick and choose which things to spend time reading to get done in time.

A day well spent - Our guide, Stavros, was amazing. He was very charming and informative. The views were great and the towns were beautiful even though the weather didn't cooperate.

Chocolate/ cheese tour - Beautiful country side but the description should have noted that the chocolate factory was for children . It was very over stimulating with small children running around everywhere, I had to read the description again to make sure didn’t read it incorrectly. The cheese factory was okay but the factory part had already shut down so you were able to walk around and see cheese and ultimately taste it but that was the extent. We had I hour to see the town of appenzeller and eat, which was not enough time at all. One mom and her three small kids were late getting back to the bus. ( no blame on her) And there was a brew pub there that the bus driver parked in front of and made comment that he will have a beer. This made me feel very uncomfortable as his driving felt erratic anyway. For the price I wish the description was a bit more clear..

Chocolate tour, great; Cheese tour, not so much - The chocolate tour was good. However, to say there was a cheese tour is misleading. We were shown into the cheese factory , given some cheese samples and told to load a QR code which would lead us through & tell us when to try the samples. It did not. There was a proper tour with a guide and those on that tour had headphones. We were told by our bus driver to sit and watch a movie about the cheese makers, but hen he hustles us out before the movie ended. After the good time at the chocolate factory, he cheese part as a let down an seemed like just an opportunity to buy cheese instead of learning how it was made.

Super Fun and Delicious Tour - The Chocolate factory and Cheese factory tours were amazing. They were both delicious and the experience was so much fun for our family. The Appenzeller town was also wonderful to visit. It’s a classic Swiss/Bavarian town. Our tour guide “Terry” (Eleftherios) was super cool and funny and gave great tips about Switzerland and the towns along the way. Made the bus ride kinda fun. Pro Tip: I don’t recommend this tour on a Sunday. We did that and ended up with a closed town. Walking around for 1.5 hours with no shops open was a bit of a bummer (which is why it’s a 4 star and not 5 star rating).

Bus ride to chocolate and cheese factory - This is a 75 minute bus ride to chocolate factory and then 20 minute ride to cheese factory. Both places are interesting and worthwhile. We went on Sunday and did not go to city of Appenzell as the shops and businesses are closed on Sunday. I Recommend the experience but NOT on Sunday.

Don't go on a Sunday. - Our bus driver was very friendly but he was not a GUIDE. Since it was Sunday we knew the shops in the small delightful village would be closed but we expected a bit of a walking tour from the guide. We were disappointed that both the cheese and chocolate factories were not producing anything since it was Sunday and were very touristy. The bus was clean and comfortable and driver skilled. When we arrived at the appointed pick up point the driver said we weren't on his tour and he sent us offf to search for the correct one.....finding none we circled back to the friendly driver and he said indeed we were on his list but that our Viator booking information had confused him. This tour did not live up to our expectation and experiences with Viator.

Bad cheese - This won’t be a great review as the total experience wasn’t worth my time but lesson learned - don’t book a tour on a national holiday weekend. Rather still why’d a tour operate on the day when both the chocolate factory and cheese factory weren’t running???

Tour cancelled last minute by operator - I had this tour booked for months in advance and even planned our itineraries around this tour. The day before the tour we get a last-minute email from tour operator that the tour was canceled because the chocolate factory and cheese factory are closed on Mondays, the day we we’re scheduled for the tour. The tour operators recommendation was to rebook for the following day or to get a refund from Viator. We were scheduled to leave the next day so could not reschedule. Very disappointing.
