This weekend, the weather may not be ideal for sunbathing, but it offers a unique opportunity to explore the cultural and historical richness of Vlorë County. With the forecast predicting overcast skies and a high chance of rain, it’s the perfect time to delve into the indoor wonders of this enchanting region.
Start your day with a historical journey through the city of Vlora. Available from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, this full-day trip from Tirana immerses you in the historical significance of Vlora, a city that played a pivotal role in Albania’s emancipation from Ottoman control. As you wander through the ancient streets, the stories of the past come alive, painting a vivid picture of the city’s rich heritage. The highlight of this tour is a visit to the St. Mary’s Monastery on Zvërnec Island, a medieval Byzantine church that stands as a testament to the resilience of the local community. Connected to the mainland by a 100-meter wooden bridge, the monastery offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Kayaking Through History: Narta Lagoon
For those who crave a bit of adventure, the kayak and birdwatching tour in Narta Lagoon is a must. Available from 7:00 AM to 11:30 AM, this activity combines the thrill of kayaking with the tranquility of birdwatching. As you paddle through the calm waters of the lagoon, you’ll encounter a diverse array of bird species, including flamingos and pelicans. The lagoon, one of the largest in Albania, is a haven for wildlife and a paradise for nature lovers. The tour also includes visits to cultural monuments such as the monastery of St. Mary and the secret church of Shen Triadha, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural tapestry.
Reviewed on 2024-08-22: Great acquaintance with the nature of Albania - Thank you our guide. We started from our house early in the morning to avoid the midday heat. Have seen many birds, flamingo and heron. The guide’s explanations were very informative. We really enjoyed bird watching, sea view, also visited old church and monastery. My advice to bring along protective swimming shoes as you will need to walk through mud to get in and out of kayak.
Culinary Delights and Cozy Cafes
After a morning of exploration, retreat to one of Zvërnec’s charming cafes for a warm cup of coffee and a taste of local delicacies. The rain-soaked streets add a touch of romance to the experience, as you savor the flavors of traditional Albanian cuisine. From freshly baked pastries to hearty stews, the culinary offerings in Zvërnec are sure to delight your taste buds.
