Highlights

Marangu - After breakfast you will meet your guides and porters, finish packing and transfer to the park entrance where you begin your Kilimanjaro climb. After formalities at the park entrance, you enter the rain forest for a gentle walk through verdant scenery to Mandara Hut. This can be done faster, but the slower the better for the eventual success of the climb. This is very important because walking slowly allows the body to acclimatize. The speed at which you walk during the first 2 days will partially determine the chances of reaching the summit. Paces should be short, measured, and rhythmical with each step placed gently. Each day you will have a packed lunch to eat along the way. The forest teems with birdlife and colobus and other monkeys may be seen. You will have cooked dinner and will stay in A-frame huts lit by solar power. Each room sleeps 4 people and there is a total capacity here of 60. Water is piped into the camp from springs and there are flush toilets behind the main hut. Your head guide will let you know the agenda for the next day. Overnight Mandara Hut

Additional Information

Marangu Route, the “Coca-Cola” route, is the oldest, most well-established route on Kilimanjaro. This is the only route that offers sleeping huts in dormitory-style accommodations in lieu of camping. There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut.

Many favor Marangu because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. However, the short time frame of the route makes altitude acclimatization fairly difficult. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. Marangu is, unfortunately, less scenic than the other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path. It is also the most crowded route for that reason.

Kilimanjaro and Safaris with Dodo Group. - Really can't speak highly enough of Dodo Group Tanzania as an operator for both doing a Kilimanjaro trek and a Tanzanian safari. Collins is brilliant to deal with, always prompt and very thorough with his responses and covered all of our questions pre-trip, adding any other information that would be useful if we'd been ignorant to ask. Fredrick and Danny were our guides for the Kilimanjaro climb and were totally professional but had great senses of humor and did everything possible to help us make it to the top (which all four of us did). The cook, waiter, and porters that also helped us get up the mountain were all hard-working, fun-loving, and great guys whose strength, balance, and endurance is superhuman, especially given some of the footwear they use to get up the mountain. The food was different each day and it was very good and was always timely and in abundance. John our driver/guide and Pantaleo our cook on safari were also amazing. John was a wealth of knowledge and was never stumped with any question we asked of him, and we're pretty sure his eyes are bionic because he could spot an animal from a Kay away and know for certain what it was in seconds. He also had a great, dry sense of humor and a fantastic command of English. Pantaleo whipped us up bush feasts every day which were incredible, especially given where and with what he had to cook. The mountain and the safari were both incredible, beautiful places, but it was the Dodo Group team/people which we will remember for just as long as we think about Tanzanian Trip.

Amazing - I was in Africa for a couple of months and in these months I met a lot of great people. Thru these friends I got to know the Dodo group cause I was looking for some nice things to experience. So first I did the Safari in Serengeti and Ngorongoro and it was a wonderful experience. After the Safari I wanted to see a little bit more of Africa and was convinced to do the kili climb. I do not regret this desision cause it was the best experience of my life. The whole crew was amazing and The guide helped me through it all. He made the climb feel like a journey and made the experience even better. We had some laughs, walks and watched the sunrise at the top of Kilimanjaro. THATS AMAZING! Dont hesitate and book dodo group for the best experience!
