Highlights

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Machame - At 9am, leave Arusha for Machame Gate, where you will meet our porters, guides and cooks that will spend the next six days trekking with you to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. The drive through coffee farms and villages to Machame Gate takes about 1.5 hours. After arriving, wait at the gate while we register your climb and the porters and guides make final preparations. Hike to Machame Camp via the mystical, moss-covered trees of Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest. As the forest thins later in the hike, take in the heathers, tall grasses and wildflowers. If the weather is clear, enjoy the striking views of your ultimate destination, Kibo Peak. Our porters and cooks will go ahead and prepare the campsite before you arrive.

Machame Camp to Shira

Kilimanjaro National Park - Today’s trek includes several uphill sections so carry plenty of drinking water as it can be hot hiking on a clear day. There are several viewpoints from which to view the plains and forests below, and the commanding Kibo and Mawenzi peaks above. Notice the change in vegetation as you gain altitude. The trees diminish in size, giving way to Kilimanjaro’s famous high altitude plants, Scenecio kilimanjari and Lobelia deckenii. After lunch, climb the Shira Plateau, created when Kibo’s lava flows filled the Shira crater. Continue to Shira Camp and relax for the rest of the day. Kibo lies to the west and Mount Meru to the east.

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

Kilimanjaro National Park - Although this up and down day ends with an elevation gain of only 110 meters, by early afternoon you will have climbed 690 meters to a height of 4,530 meters before beginning your descent to Barranco Camp. This day is crucial for acclimatization. After breakfast, hike east on the Shira Plateau before reaching the junction for the Shira and Lemosho Routes. Continue on through the barren landscape before stopping for lunch. Shortly after lunch, reach the highest point of the day before descending quickly to Barranco Camp. Faster hikers can take a detour via Lava Tower, a 300-foot lava formation jutting out of the mountainside.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Kilimanjaro National Park - Leave Barranco Camp after breakfast for Karanga Valley. The day begins with an hour-and-a-half scramble up the Barranco Wall. This is the hardest part of the day and in some places you may have to use your hands to aid your climb. After reaching the top, hike through fairly level terrain before making a short but steep descent into the green Karanga River Valley.

Karanga Campsite to Barafu Campsite

Kilimanjaro National Park - After breakfast, begin the hike to Barafu Camp. On the way to Barafu, view several of Kibo’s glaciers as well as the junction that connects the descent route, Mweka, with the Machame trail. During day four, hike by the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. Although the trail to Barafu passes through alpine desert with little vegetation, Barafu Camp offers stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Try to sleep upon finishing dinner as you will wake before midnight for your summit hike.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro - Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Hike by the light of your headlamp for the next six hours. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail is very steep until you reach the crater rim at Stella Point. The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately one hour. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy views of the mountain, crater, clouds and glaciers. At Barafu Camp, eat breakfast and take a short break. You still have another three to five hours to go before reaching Mweka Camp.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Mweka - After breakfast, finish the trek with a hike through the forest to Mweka Gate. The trail may be slippery following rain. Our vehicles will meet you at the lower station of Mweka Gate to take you back to Arusha.

An incredible adventure - The whole trip, the small details, the people. It was fantastic and I I would not want to change anything.

Absolutely amazing! - Having experienced the impeccable organiazation by Duma on a Tanzania family trip 2014 (one week safari and one week on Zanzibar for me, my wife and our five kids) it was a no-brainer to choose Duma when I, my wife and one of our youngest cubs (now 17 years) decided to hike/climb Kilimanjaro. In spite of our previous excellent experience Duma managed to exceed our expectations! Our head guide (Emmanuel), assistant guide (Colman) and waiter (Dickson) proved to be an absolute dream-team together with Jamal (cook) and the remaining 12 persons in our support crew. Emmanuel, Colman and Dickson were very professional with a high level of security as well as supportive, encouraging - and not least fun and easy to be around. The tent-crew kept our tents (a small 3-person sleeping tent and a larger mess-tent for meals and storage of equipment) in excellent condition and the toilet-tent was always nice and clean (very important!). Jamal prepared very nice rich meals that we ate with good apetite during the entire trip (nope, no AMS). We were actually talking about how we probably were putting on weight climbing Kibo... :-) The hike was challanging, no doubt about that, but with the excellent support by primarily Emmanuel, Colman and Dickson (called the Goon Squad by our son) there was never any question whether we'd all make it. Summit night was the most challanging day starting at midnight under a crispy starry clear sky. Reaching the crater rim at dawn and finally standing at Uhuru point just before nine am under a sunny clear sky was absolutely fantastic! If you have any thoughts what so ever of climbing Kilimanjaro - go for it! You will not regret it! And if you decide to do it, I couldn't recommend Duma stronger. This company is amazing - and when hearing from the employers during the hike that this is the company basically everybody in the business want to work for, well, choosing Duma is an absolute no-brainer. /Richard Birgander

TRIP OF A LIFETIME - Our trek with Duma was absolutely incredible!!! It's crazy how much thought, effort, and supplies goes into a Kilimanjaro trek (especially for a family of 8), but Duma takes care of it all. Our mountain guides were incredible - friendly, encouraging, patient, experienced, and safe. The porters were cheerful, hardworking, and really fun to talk with. Duma is a founding member of the Kilimanjaro Porter Assistance Project, meaning all of their porters are paid fairly, have a manageable load and good sleeping conditions, and eat three meals a day. This is NOT the case with other companies. Every effort was taken to make sure our trek was as comfortable and successful as possible. Absolutely loved it! Book with Duma!

I would give more stars if I could! GO WITH DUMA!!! - GUYS....you gotta listen to me. Duma Explorer is the best. We did a 7 day trek up Kilimanjaro and a two-day safari with a family of teenagers and a 10 year-old. We have never done anything like this before, so we weren't sure how it was going to go. All of the guides were AMAZING!!! Genuinely honest and good people. Their English is great, and they even helped us learn a little Swahili while we were there! They were so so so helpful and we all made it to the top!!! They even helped us organize and pick up our COVID tests before our return flight. The camping gear they provided was top-notch as well. We felt so spoiled while we were on the mountain haha. I cannot stress enough how much I would recommend this company for your adventures in Tanzania.

BOOK WITH DUMA EXPLORER! THEY ARE AMAZING! - In October our family was hesitant about traveling to Tanzania during the pandemic. However, we decided to go and we are so glad we did! Our climb up Kili with Duma Explorer was a memory that will last a lifetime. It was a beautiful and amazing accomplishment. Duma Explorer made the trip smooth and so easy! The staff and guides at Duma are incredible and we left feeling like they are part of our family! If you are remotely thinking of going to Tanzania and climbing Kili, don't hesitate, book with Duma, and they will take care of everything! They are definitely the BEST tour company in Tanzania!
