Additional Information

Easter is an extremely significant celebration in the Ethiopian Christian community, marking the culmination of their religious festivals. Adherents of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church eagerly anticipate its arrival, adhering to a stringent lent period of 55 days during which no animal-based products including meat, milk, or eggs are consumed. One week before Easter is known as “HeMamat” – a solemn time of remembrance dedicated to reflecting on the tribulation, persecution, injuries, and suffering of Jesus. During this week, individuals abstain from laughter, displays of affection, jests, or frivolity, instead choosing to devoutly commemorate the ordeals of the Lord. One week following Easter presents another vibrant celebration, “Dagme Tinsae”, which honors Jesus’ ascension into heaven, and is celebrated with as much fervor as the primary Easter festival.
